feminizing your own seeds

This may be BS, but I met a fellow grower at a dispensary who told me a supposed technique for determining female seeds. If you use a jewelers loop or magnifying glass, and look at the little ring where the seed attaches to the plant you will see one of two things. rough and bumpy around the ring=male, smooth around the ring= female. I looked and sure enough the differences do exist. Can anyone confirm or deny this technique? I haven't tried to verify myself and was hoping someone out there knew whether this was true.

One vote for BS. It's true that the genetics of the seed determine sex of the plant that grows from it, but the seed itself is (obviously) formed by the parent. I have never heard about a plant that produces different seed cases for different sexes. I'm also skeptical about whether the plant that is producing the seeds actually knows whether the seed has female or male genetics, which it would need to know if it was to give them different appearances.

That's not to say it's impossible, just my two cents.

Haven't looked at purchased fem seeds, just went through some bagseeds I had lying around to see if the differences he told me about did exist, and the difference is pretty clear.

Not saying the seeds casing is different. You have to look at some seeds where they attach to the mother plant. you will see a tiny ring, around ring will be either smooth, or bumpy...kind of wrinkled looking. the difference is very small but very clear. Also, why would a plant know the sex of it's offspring, when we humans only recently developed the ability to determine before birth what our children will be. I invite you to look for yourself.

well there must be some method to determine sex...i mean im new to growing but when you order fem seeds they are all female...so there must be someway to tell? or am i overlooking something possibly? how do the seedbanks know between male and female seeds?

Well as of yet I have not produced a plant with seeds, I'm not quite advanced enough to mess with genetics. And I did misinterpret what you meant, I thought that the actual seed appeared different but you're saying that the way it attaches to the plant is different.

I would wait until a more advanced grower sees this, as they could probably shine some light on the subject.

Ran into the guy again last night and he says he read it in High Times, so if someone has a subscription and could look this up I'm sure we would all love to know the facts regarding this question.
