co2

hey im gonna begin growin one or two plants shortly just wanted to gather as much knowledge as i could first...do i NEED a co2 source? or is this just something that makes your plants a little better?

You don't NEED it. Or at least it hasn't stopped my plant from growing nicely in my environment ^^.. Some actually prefer really good air circulation > Co2

you do not need enhanced co2 if you're growing only one or two plants, the air in the grow room will not have significantly different co2 than outside air. some growers add co2 as this can speed growth if every other major variable is managed correctly. but to make this practical you need either a gas generator or co2 bottles and a monitor/controller to manage the co2 levels. some people use ghetto set ups that release limited amounts of co2 that cannot be managed to the optimal levels. not sure this approach works at all.

You are correct you do not need Co2 but you can use Co2 enrichment to make your plants better.
With Co2 enrichment your plants can withstand higher temperatures using around 1500ppm

If you have a pest problem you can crank it up to 10000 ppm and choke all the little bastards.

But it is not essential to a grow.

You can also make your own little Co2 kit for each plant.

1 tsp Active Dried Yeast
4 tbsp of Sugar
200ml boiling water
600ml of cold water
2 litre plastic bottle
1 litre plastic bottle
300mm of airline tubing
1 small rubber gromit
PVA glue
Drill

Drill the bottle top of the 2 litre bottle and place the gromit inside the hole (only drill a hole big enough for the gromit you are using) then use some PVA glue or sealant to seal around the gromit to the bottle top allow this to dry.

Mix the sugar and the 200ml of boiling water in a jug and allow the sugar to dissolve.
Add the 600ml of cold water.

Add your yeast into the water and stir continuously for about 60seconds. Then pour this mixture into your 2 litre bottle and leave it to one side for about 10 mins.

3/4 fill the 1 litre bottle with plain water.
Take your bottle top with the sealed gromit and push the airline tubing into the gromit so that a little bit of the tubing is inside the bottle top.
Screw the bottle top onto your 2 litre bottle and place the tubing from the bottle top submerged in the 1 litre bottle. PLace the smaller bottle as close to the top of your plants as you can.
After around 30mins you will see bubbles escaping from the tubing through the water of the 1litre bottle.

Co2 is heavier than o2 so you need to make sure that the 1 litre bottle is around the tops of your plants.

Just a cheap and cheerful way of adding a very small amount of extra Co2.

Yeah i agree with DR the CO2 setups can get really complicated and expensive to get the right equiptment to test the PPM. just skip it. besides they will get enough with you being in the room and breathing. LOL.

So Jon lets say that it started getting a lot hotter because of summer and I needed my plants to be able to withstand the heat so I supplemented Co2. Would this work at all? I thought Co2 only worked to supplement plant if temps were fairly average 75 or so..??

Plants use the Co2 better at slightly hotter temps so i think at least. Im still a noob myself. DesertRat will probably explain better,

But dont be fooled my little Cheap and cheerful will not give you anywhere near a decent PPM i just think it can only help.

So i am lead to believe that if you are enriching with around 1500ppm your plants can withstand temps of 85-95 (Again this is only what i think i have read) i cant be trusted sometimes im wrong lol.

I currently do not enrich with a full Co2 system i only use my little cheap and cheerfuls. A friend of mine DantheBull uses Co2 enrichment and his plants are thriving as his whole setup is AMAZING.

you dont need co2 for 2 plants
and unless the room you are useing is completely sealed up the co2 will be a waste
just keep a fan on them and you'll do fine

So if it does happen to hit 85-95 this summer before my plant is done flowering is there anything that can be done? I mean there is a fan blowing on it but its closet growspace with no door just a sheet hanging..

all you can do is try to cool it off
if the outside temps are high
try to match the grow room temps to the out side temps
at the very least

so if its 95 out side try to get your grow room down to 95 or lower
temp problems come into play after long term exsposure like 3-5 days of high temps
a few days of 85-95 wont do to much damaged but you dont want a whole week of it or a whole grow of it

ideally you want to build a box that you can cool to grow in or a tent
you can buy the smallest cheapest ac you can find then build a box around it but this is over kill
you'll do fine with out all of this

Yeah it doesn't get too hot around here probably 95 max on a hot day so it should be good if vented well with fan on it? also just using 150 watt hps with some cfl side lighting so heat off lights isn't really an issue.
