Hey Bagz, saw you asked about shortening the day period. You can definitely speed it up by doing this. I flowered a plant years ago at 13(L)/11(D) and chopped it on day 97 when it wasn't even done. Then about 6 months ago I got DJ Shorts book: How to Cultivate Exceptional Cannabis (or something very close to that). He mention that a longer light period will result in a longer flowering time. While a shorter light period will speed it up. This is because there is a chemical that cannabis produces that causes it to flower. This chemical is broken down with photosynthesis. When the day shortens and it is in the dark for a longer period it allows this chemical to build up which induces flowering. The down side to making the light period shorter is that cannabis needs light to grow, produce buds and mature. I am not positive, but I believe he said it can reduce potency too. It has been a while since I have read it, but that is the gist of what he said.

Went and found the book, and while it does mention different light periods for different strains and the such he doesn't specify how it affects their bud production. I definitely saw this somewhere though because it had a big chart showing examples of different light periods and their effect on yield and flowering times. Just need to find the book I read it in. Too bad I have almost 10 different books on growing. It may take me a while before I find it.

Hey MotorcycleMike. Thanks for the words of encouragement man, stoaked that this little project of mine is entertaining everyone else as well as me. Watch through to the end, as I will progressively start panicing and needing advise. And I will follow this to the end with pics of the final harvest and hopefully some weights of the yield per plant. Show what I manage to pull off in this little setup.
Then in all honesty I will probably get high as shit after I have harvested and my uni projects are handed in. I will end writing a sweet high story detailing the the smoke experience.

Hey Jebus. Welcome abord. I would be real keen to hear what you can find in your various books about the light cycles affect on flowering. That is something I am definitely interested in. From what I can find on the subject a shorter daylight period will speed the process up. And your right, at the compromise of yield and potency. It would be good if some people who have tried this could throw there thoughts and experience up here. I look foward to hearing what you find out Jebus. Please hit me back.

I have currently changed my light cycle to 11.5 hours on. 12.5 off. Nothing dramatic. Just in an effort to potentially speed things up. I will throw some more pics up in a few days for yall.
Thanks for the input team. Legendary.

My pleasure Bagz. I'll keep an eye out for that book and see if I can snap a photo of it that is readable.

Like I said I did 13/11 with my first grow and it probably could have gone for 110-120 days.

In DJ Short's book he even goes into detail like the angle of the light. He is all about mimicking nature as best as possible. He believes this is how you get a plant to its full potential. For example he said you want the light to shine on sativas from just about straight above, and you should use a light mover on a straight-line track, and not a circular path.

OK, took some pics of DJ Short's book, but the camera died before I got all of it.

It starts like this:

Resurrecting heritage strains
To save the "true heritage strains" they will have to be reintroduced to their region-of-origin. The land-race varieties need to be (continue in pics)
part 1.jpgpart 2.jpgpart 3.jpgpart 4.jpgpart 5.jpg
(after pics)
root growth, stationary plants, and a more lowland-type sativa friendly environment. It could be used for breeding indoor sativa variety.

He does mention the 11/13 cycle for sativas but that they also need 4-6 months. This is probably for those pure sativas that take forever to mature anyways. Just thought it would be good info for some people. When I find the other book I'll post the pics of it along with the charts that described what changes to expect from changing the light cycle.

Hey thanks heaps for going to the effort of taking the pics Jebus. The third page is real interesting as a couple of guys on here identified my strain as a Sativa haze skunk cross.
I just hope it is not as longer flowering period as the heritage strains your info relates to.. I would be keen to see someone with light tracks etc. You can get pretty tech with growing.
I just have to do the best with what I got to work with in my shelf lol. Like I said I dropped the light time down to 11.5 on. See what happens.

The big difference though was after using the Treacle/Molasses. Holy shit the plants grew in size overnight. A bit of swelling of the buds and some nice crystals happening. Just since the first dose. Snap. They tops of the bud also produced new growth overnight, although I'm sure this is not a good thing. They should be swelling not growing... Pictures to come soon.
Any thoughts anyone?

Do you have any way to check the trichomes? If they are putting out new growth then they still have some time. The light change might have given it a kick in the butt to hurry up and finish though. It may take it as a sign that winter is close. You still have about 2 weeks right? With how they looked in the last set of pics I'd say there probably isn't too much more for it to do. Those buds were already pretty big back then. If worse comes to worse chop the day you leave no matter what. I would say find someone you trust to take care of it while you are gone but when it comes to growing you can't trust anyone. I don't care who it is helping you that person will tell someone you are growing, and anyone who hears about it after that won't think twice about blabbing it to anyone willing to listen. Also I would really recommend you do not take the buds with you. You will have to expose them to air and there is no way to mask the smell if you get pulled by a cop. Can you do a slow drying somehow? That way it doesn't turn brittle and crumble into dust when broken up or get moldy from the humidity.

Actually, thinking about it now I would chop 5-7 before you leave. That still gives you 9-11 days to finish up. Then they can be dry and in jars for your travels and you won't have to worry about the smell on the road. Also trim and remove the majority of stem. This should help shorten the drying period. Do the buds seem rock-hard and dense, or are they soft and fluffy looking? This could affect the drying times too.

So cancel my last post. My recommendation would be to chop with time to dry no matter how she looks.

Try and check the trichomes if you can. At least then you can get an idea of how the high will be.

I know what you mean by don't trust anyone. There is no way the plants or bud are staying in the flat. It's not the sort of thing to leave lying around. I will more than likely bus up the country. roughly 8 hours. Will it matter if I just cut the day I leave. Put the bud into an airtight container for 8 hours on a bus. then hang to dry?
If this wil be an issue then I may have to cut a wek earlier. You are good at planning in advance. I hadn't thought about drying. Cheers.

I don't know if that would be okay or not. I want to say you can seal them up for 8 hours but I feel like they might get a mildew smell and once mold sets in there is nothing you can do. Maybe cut a day or two before so they can at least dry a little bit. Anyone else have experience with this? I know wet weed gives off heat. So if it is all in jars they may start to cook themselves and degrade the THC. Personally I would try to dry them at least part way before the trip. Even just 4 days will make it a lot better. You definitely won't be able to burp the jars. The stench would fill the bus or any roadside bathroom you attempted it in. Also, you have to figure in travel time to the bus and from the bus to your final destination. That might up the sealed time by an hour or more.

Cheers for your advise Jebus. I am not looking forward to having to take them down and rush the final process. Soo annoying. I am contemplating letting a friend stay in my room and look after them for three weeks. But chances are they will be coming on a road trip with me.
You make a lot of sense, I will cut afew days prior to leaving and let them dry a bit. Can't waste everything by risking mould. And like you said its not worth sacrificing taste.
Cheers for your help my friend.
Time for some pics for yall I think.

67 fucking days and they are still not getting their shit sorted. I had no idea my strain was this long to flower.
Anyway, they are looking good. Seem to be enjoying the molasses and I have changed their light cycle down to 11 on 13 off in an attempt to get them to ripen up. Flushing will start in a week. too.

Please check these out and throw me your opinions.

I think they look good, you'll be fine. Air circulation can either help or hinder the drying process. Using a fan aimed at your drying area (which is?) speeds things up. here try the method they give ya,

Hey Touchet. Perfect solution and it works well with what Jebus was saying. I will dry for say 24 hours, then bag and seal it. Take it with me on my road trip and continue to dry it when I get there. Should be perfect. Great vid. Thank you.

I agree with Shannon and the other person, sorry I forgot the name but she IS nekkid ;) And then follow the method they list in the vid and you should be smoking and choking in no time.

I'll do a write up and vid on this harvest for the journal.

Let me know if you ever need a custom video for anything, I'd be happy to do it. Just did one tonight for someone having problems grasping topping procedures.

Your ladies look beautiful try not to get trigger happy lol.

Hey again Touchet. Thanks heaps, it's good to see soo many people on here that are keen to help us new kids out.
How often do you harvest man?
Cheers for the compliments on my plants, it has been a heap of fun training them to grow in my small setup. I am not trigger happy at all, just have a deadline where I am going away for several weeks so they have to come down by then. If it wasn't for that I would be happy to let them do their thing for as long as it takes.
