Is there such thing as pond hydroponics?

I was thinking about how much fish shit and stuff can be in a pond, and it made me wonder if you could like just float some medium with a plant in it and a bubbler attached in a pond. Has anyone heard of anything like this? Would the nute concentrations even be near high enough?

I've never seen anyone do a small scale version but commercial grow ops use this. It's called aquaponics.

i think its fuken brilliant man... give it a shot bro and see what happens just put a good size air stone in the water (one big enough for the pond you got and let her rip...I dont see the harm in any of this other than the risk of someone seeing your grow in your pond!

hello,

i saw a version of this on youtube. so i tried it. i had a small fishtank around and went to wally world and got 4 lil gold fish. i cut a sytrofoam chunk out to hold my plant and put a clone in the water. although nothing has died, it has only been goin about 24 hrs thus far, the tank has gotten very cloudy. maybe due to having 4 gold fish in 2 gallons of water. anyone know about this, should i buy a filter for the water? i put a cheap 65w r40 sho&grow light on it. pics below. any and all input welome.

goldfish require large aquariums because they produce a slime coat that fouls the water pretty quickly. If you wanted to do this with fish and no filter, should have chose a betta they breathe air not water.

Do you have an air pump or anything moving the water around?

The tank is going through an ammonia cycle at the moment and the fish will die of ammonia poisoning eventually. four is way to many to cycle with. You would need to change the water daily to keep them alive.

oscars get HUGE i think they require something like 90 gallons

Your best bet is to get a betta once you no longer have the goldfish. He would kill them other wise. Only one betta to a tank. that would make a nice home for one. I know this all seems weird but i've been into aquariums for 8 years.

Here's a big article about it. A friend saved this for me a while ago when he saw it in the paper. Unfortunately, the online version doesn't seem to have all of the pics that were in the paper. One of the pics was of someone's setup - they had a huge tub PACKED with goldfish (like the feeder fish tanks you see at a pet store, but way bigger).

They call it 'aquaponics'.

Ive been into aquariums for a while, not recently, but 5-6 years ago I was, and goldfish are pretty indestructable under standard circumstances, which would make me think they are a decent choice.

thank you , if this method does not work i plan to give that way a shot where i build and ebb and flow type of system, but i am hoping that the dwc type of aquaponics will work, it is very simple. tanks again for helping

Walmart workers are usually dead wrong about anything related to pets. I test water chemicals all the time, mind you im into salt water now. Bet they said some crap like let the aquarium sit for 24 hours then add fish.

All that would do is allow the chlorine to evaporate from tap water. You cannot have an aquarium unless it cycles and becomes self sufficient in turning fish waste into non threatening chemicals. agreed that goldfish are tough, but its frowned upon in the aquarium world to cycle with fish. with no water changes the ammonia levels will rise even to high for goldfish.
