CFL Growing Costs

He was asking about the electric bill, not how to use the lights.

With 5 CFL lights, your electric bill shouldn't really get that high. Its not like you are using like 2000 watts and even then its not that big either

but how many for say a 3,4 plat set up? Maybe 5 CFLs all together? each 25 watt? or as many watt as i can get?
Are You illiterate? He did ask more than the electric bill. For future reference any sentence ending with a question mark.........is a question!!

what is 6500k? and 2700k? is that link lumens or something because i thought that you want more lumens in the flowering state..
6500K/2700K is the light color spectrum that is emitted from said bulb. K = Kelvin and that is a unit increment of temperature. 6500K(Daylight/bright white) emit a blueish hue and are good for green growth, that is why it is pretty common to use them during the vegetative cycle. 2700K(warm light) emit a orange/red hue and are good for flowering of plants in the flower cycle. I believe that lumens have not much to do with the color spectrum, they are a measure of light intensity... someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Hope that clears it up for ya. :eyesmoke:

Haha PhishJoy thats hilarious, Hey Im buying a bunch of CFL's adaptors and indoor growin supplies. My Walmart only had 3 left and I bought all threee they must be selling well. How exactly does the fixture exchange program work?

Cransi Your explanation of light spec sounds point on acurate to me!

That it true about walmart. As for how it's working, I've got 1 female autoflower (trying ruderalis out) 1 female 'The Church' and 5 bagseeds. 1 bag seed looks doa and one laid over but I gave it some superthrive and its like at 45 degrees lol. But the rest are doing great and I've only managed to get 4 of the 8 bulbs up. I hope to find some 6500K bulbs for the photoperiods and let the auto have the 2700s by itself. Since I planted them all about the same time I should be able to harvet the auto by the time I need the 2700s for the photoperiods flowering duration. So as of right now, I'm learning a lot about CFLs and closet grows. As well as making a good collection of tools, items and other crazy indoor nessecities. Sometimes I'm medicated when I post...so sorry if my spelling and grammar have small flaws lol

how do you find out if the bulb is 2700k or what not?
GE's 'general purpose' bulbs are 2700k. It doesn't say it anywhere on the package, but I called GE and they are in fact 2700k. Some of there packages will have a Kelvin rating on them, but most don't. Other brands seem to put that info right on the package, at least 'daylight', 'softwhite', etc. HTH

That sounds like its about perfect Phish. Just went to walmart today picked up a timer, and a bunch more cfl's and stuff. Built a little grow light and all together now

2x13 W 6500K
3x26 W 6500K
2x26 W 2500K

Total of 156 CFL Watts

Hopefully the girls like this!

Hey got any pictures of your new light? I am kinda still in the ghetto phase of my grow, so I rigged up a fixture that I have seen around RUI. I might get some ideas form your setup... all thanks to you of course.:eyesmoke:

Ive been thinking about buying a few cheap power strips and rig a bunch of lights on a few of them. Think about it, with 3 power strips I'd say you could easily get 6 to 10 Lights on it. I'm sure you could hang them from a ceiling with some creativity but you could even have a few sitting under the plants once they reach that size for that kind of light.

Since a lot of people think that the heat in CFL grows comes from how much cord you have, this might help solve some peoples heat issues. It would keep it nice and tidy as well, I've got a lot of cords that really just make my closet look cramped.

I'll be attending a music festival and possibly a trip to the beach, so I'm sure I'll add some more lighting and work on adding pics to my grow topic in a week or 2. I can't imagine how much smoother indoor growing will be next grow :)

You would be amazed how much simply zip tying your cords together , or stapleing them down, makes a difference on how organized your room looks, i did it and it really helped, i havent triped over them once since.:leaf: I do like the powerstrip thing, i think i am goona do it myslef in my small cabinet to get more light.

Funny you guys bring up organization, I have two powerstrips in my closet and the wires are going everywhere. My light FOR NOW is esentiall a power strip with socket adapters. Once the plants get a tad bigger im getting a couple extension cords to hang them up. But As for the power strip it works great now! its all I need I have it hung up a couple inches away from my plants and for the time being im using little foil hoods on each light because the lights are so close together i cant get a pop can over them. I have 7 lights now all together and Ill get the setup pics posted soon. Remember my closet grow is still quite ghetto too, but like Phishjoy said "Think about how much heasier growing indoors will be next year"! Id love to see some of your guys CFL set ups too, I figure between all us RIUers we can all bounce good ideas off eachother!

Closet Grow pics. This is the temperary light I suppose it serves the purpose. Its not a pretty grow room but its a budgeted effective one. I highly reccomend the light plug in adapters from walmart for like a dollar, with some power strips, extension cords outlet splitters and light socket adapters you can build a cheap great light. Its no 600 W MH or HPS but hey CFL will grow all I need! Id love to see yourguys set ups!

I was using this same timer you have for about a week before i realized it never turned the lights out, they are cheap and defective, you may want to check it. gl

I have seen multiple power strip light set ups around RIU, so I had to make one myself a few days ago.

I do have somewhat of a reflector... I bought heavyweight poster board an cut it in half an rest it on top of the back side of the power strip. There is about 4-5 inches of clearance from the lights an the poster board reflector. The temps have only gone up by about 1-1.5 degrees since I had started using it. It should help out somewhat... I hope.
