This is extremely easy to do and works very well. I have used this design for strawberries and tomatoes for years and it has increased my yields off of those way better. The fruits are larger and taste better. Here is the design with pictures.
1. Take a container (toilet paper rolls work well and are basically free) I use a plastic cup and punch holes in the bottom.
2. Stick the container about 1 inch below the top soil and fill it half way with rocks. Fill the rest of the cup with worm castings or bat guano.
3. Put some water in it every time you water. It will make a tea like fertilizer that will keep your plants healthy
Note: If you're worried about transmitting disease with the rocks for any reason, place them in the cup and water through it until you are satisfied with the cleanliness.
This also works if your plants need just a little more than their soil can provide. If you have a N deficiency you can feed with high N bat guano through this.
