Hi i got a grolux sylvania 400w.supernova light case. i only want to grow around 3 plants at a time.. is it worth paying the bill for it. or is it worth getting Cfls to do the job with little cost.. i have heard that a 400w good light will do about 8 plants. worried it will burn them if there is not many plants in there..
thanks any advice appreciated..!

maybe use the cfl's for seedlings and vegging and then the other for flowering? If it's a concern. As far as burning them, adjust the height of the light and you should be okay.

PS. I'd venture to say once you get going you will want more plants at more stages, so plan accordingly!

Good luck

Sounds like great plan RMH, use CFL for veg and your high power system for flower. Im using CFL all the way but would do exactly what RMH suggested if I had your system.

Make sure if and when you get CFL to get high temp or "daylight" bulbs, 5500/6500k color temp. I would suggest 3 bulbs per plant if your gonna use the common CFL bulb size which is usually a 3 or 4 ring 100/23 watt replacement.

I would give them about two weeks to develop. Add a few more CFL bulbs in the meantime, and you'll be fine. Keep them right on top of them no more than 2/3 inches about the plants. And having a fan on them for ventilation is always good.

Best of luck.

i am using 1000w of HID lights for three plants (current grow) - so far it has been worth the few extra bucks on my electric bill...

Mine are low wat CFL 6 6500K and 4 5500K bulbs, but when I started I only had 4 5500K bulbs and that wokred great for 8 lilttle seedlings, as they grew I added more bulbs.
