What's the best light for veg?

I have a 400w hps, and 2 tube 40w fluoresent, which is better for veg? And...I have some newbies, also finishing a lady, is it ok to have the newbs on 12 and 12 for about 2-3 weeks before going to 24? is it going to hurt them? About a week in, they look good. Ones leaves started to curl weird but looks healthy (could be bad genes, or lighting on 12&12?) Thanks!

I think he's asking which is better for the plants while vegging, a 400w HPS or 2 40w flouro tubes. As long as you aren't getting the plants too hot I think the 400w is going to better as more light is almost always better. The seedlings should be fine under 12/12, the only problem would be if they started to flower and then increased the light and they reverted back to veg. But just for 2 or 3 weeks won't have much problem, the only thing would be slow growth or even stretching from having lower light.

i'm just a bit concerned about the state of the newbies he mentions. at already a week in, and a further 2-3 weeks of 12/12 the OP is asking for nothing but problems and a long waiting game. i think it would probably be better just to throw the new girls under a 42w cfl elsewhere than to get them flowering only for you have to try and revert them back to veg, normally a fairly slow process

Metal Halides are satistically the best for vegging because of their blue spectrum lighting, High Pressure Sodium bulbs are better for flowering plants with their red spectrum lighting

Do not.. I repeat.. Do not!!! Use HPS lighting.. during veg. Using only HPS lighting during veg.. will cause you major problems towards the end of the grow. Not only will it cause problems.. but.. when harvest time finally gets there.. and your all excited about harvesting your own plant that you spent so much time and effort into growing.. you'll end up with very very very Airy buds.

There won't hardly be any density to the buds.. which means they won't have hardly any weight to them. It's totally counterproductive to use HPS lighting through out the entire grow.

Take my advice.. I've experienced this before. It's no fun.

Just trying to save someone from having a shitty harvest is all.. plus trying to educate people like 'headworm'. I'm not trying to be a dick or anything buddy.. but.. unless you know what your doing.. please don't give people advice unless you know what your talking about.

Fluro's are by far the best for veg but 2 X 40w fluros are not enough. You need to have 4 to 6 X 40W fluro's to have them provide enough light for the veg process. You could also go 400W MH if you have a duel balast. 400 hps would be better than veging with only 80w of fluro's, but I would say get more fluro's.

HPS lighting.. is for flowering cycles only buddy. As I just explained in the post below this one..

HPS is for flowering. MH lighting is for veg.

Yes I have to agree with you. Some people give advice from their perspective. That is what a forum is all about after all. I did however agree with your assesment. The fact that you had to post this request for a 1 to one straight after my post suggests that I am one of those people you are talking about. I am sure he is not stupid and can actually make up his own mind on what advice to follow.

Posting your advice here helps everyone, rather than a one on one to avoid other's opinion from cramping your style. Again I stress I agree 100% with what you are saying. Fluro;s are best for flowering, but the fact is you need allot of watage for them to be efective.

If I had a 40 w fluro and a 400w hps and I could not get my hands on anything else. I would veg with both. All I am saying is that everyone's situation is different, so it is as much about what is the perfect thing to do as it is about what is the best thing to do under the circumstances.

Buy some kelvin rated 6500K for veg due to the fact that they r blue spectrum,relitively cheap and they will get you through a good size veg than your big guns for flowering. Worry about MH lighting next time.Definitely do not use hps lighting for vegetation. I'm currently growing under 146W of 75%6500k&25%3500K. Total organic FFOF medium waterings with molasses every other one. She is now beginning her 9th node and she is 7" tall at only 18 days since she broke ground,also I run my lighting 24/7 so I know from experience that cfl's really work and with your hps lighting for flowering you my friend will have a awesome plant and kudos to ganjaluvr once again he saves the day. ray you can check out my grow in the journals titled under Northern Lights KC Brains. I'm no longer growing the NL but my new plant is LA Woman and she is thriving come over and check out the thread and will get through together brother.
