Noob looking for critique on grow room set up

Hi everyone,

I have learned so much from lurking on this site in the last few months, so thanks to everyone who posts what they know.

This is my first attempt at growing, and I'm looking for any feedback/critique/advice on my grow room set up and answers to some questions. I appreciate your assistance!

The Room

The grow room itself is a small self-contained room in my basement measuring 3' wide by 6' deep. The back 3', however, are unusable as there is a sump pump mounted in the floor with a flush pipe rising up 15” and then branching out and up a wall. The room is located underneath the stairs to my front door, so the back 3' also slopes down at a 45 degree angle to meet the back wall. It has concrete block foundation walls on three sides, and a thick steel door makes up the 4th wall. The ceiling is poured concrete and I have about 7' of headroom before the ceiling starts to slope.

This room is ideal as this is a stealth set up. No significant modifications had to be made to my basement which is good as I'm hiding the room from a roommate and other people who have been in my house many times and would otherwise ask about renovations. No light penetrates the door frame. It is, however, and unfortunate and awkward shape and size.

The Set Up

I started off by painting the concrete walls and ceiling with Armor Coat masonry paint. This paint is flat white and allegedly controls dust and moisture and is mildew resistant (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/3/HouseHome/PaintStains/SpecialtyPaints/PRD~0489715P/Armor%252BCoat%252BAcrylic%252BLatex%252BMasonry%252BPaint.jsp?locale=en). I changed the door knob on the room to one that locks with a key. The knob looks just like the one I removed.

I then boxed in the sump pump to create a clean workspace and counter top using white melamine. I installed a shelf above the sump box for supplies. The top of the sump box (under the shelf) may become a future veg/clone box. The front panel of the box is removable with 4 screws if I need to access the pump for any reason.

DSC05863.jpg

I tapped into the duct work for my house and brought in a 4” fresh air line into the room (top right of room) and connected the duct to a diffuser. I rented a hammer drill and 4” masonry core bit to get through the concrete block walls with a clean cut. This provides a constant feed of air into the room (that is currently being air conditioned by my central HVAC system).

DSC05855.jpg DSC05858.jpg

I then drilled an exhaust hole to vent this room to the exterior of my house (top left of room). On the outside, the hole is in an inconspicuous place and connects to a back-draft preventing exhaust cap (http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=902889&Ntt=902889&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&recN=0&N=0&Ntk=P_PartNumber).

DSC05857.jpg DSC05866.jpg

Connected to the exhaust duct is a 100 CFM bathroom exhaust fan (http://www.airkinglimited.com/specsheets/BFQ110Spec.pdf). All the new duct work was insulated with expanding foam. The exhaust fan was mounted with a carpet backing to the block walls to prevent vibration. At this time, there is no odor control in the room. I will evaluate later on when things get more fragrant. I did, however, add a furnace filter air freshener that makes the whole house smell nice. :)

Lighting is, at the moment, a fluorescent fixture with two 40w tubes (GE Ecolux Plant and Aquarium). I also have a CFL with a 20w grow bulb in it (Ottlite Natural Supplement Plant Bulb). The 4' tubes are temporary until my 400w MH/HPS is delivered. After that, it's moving back to being a utility light. The CFL may be joined by others for the small veg/clone box at a later date. The 4' tubes are sitting on ceiling hooks and chains. The new MH/HPS will have yoyos.

I have an oscillating tower fan blowing on the seedlings on the “breeze” setting. The lights are on an 18/6 timer along with the exhaust fan. I am planning on getting another timer for the exhaust to turn it on and off in 30 minuter intervals.

The room shares its electrical circuit with three basement incandescent lights. The sump pump is also on this circuit.

DSC05864.jpg

The Crop

The seedlings are Kali Mist. My soil mix is 5 parts good quality organic potting soil, 5 parts perlite, 2 parts organic farmyard compost (1-2-1). The babies were paper towel germinated and sprouted on May 21 and 23. They are about 2" tall.

DSC05860.jpg

The seedlings are currently on a small rolling cart that will be removed once they are transplanted into 3gal pots and the new lights are installed and can be lowered to the floor. Sitting with the seedling pots is the probe to the min-max thermometer/hygrometer.

The Cost

Supplies and the drill rental to build my room cost $345, new equipment cost $400 and grow supplies and seeds cost $200. All in, I spent $1000 for the full first grow set up.

The Questions

Once my 400w MH/HPS light arrives, am I at risk of overloading my circuit if the sump pump turns on? I have no idea what load the pump might put on the circuit (and I don't know any of the details about the pump – it is not readily accessible without a huge production). Other items on this circuit include the fans = 125w, all the basement lights = 180w, and landscape lighting (same circuit) = 315w. I could run an extension cord from outside the grow room through the fresh air duct to bring another circuit into the room for the ballast of the new light, but I'd prefer to keep the room self-contained if possible.

I don't ever plan on having a huge number of plants in this room (floor space once the rolling shelf comes out is limited to 9 square feet), so I'm not sure if I will need to worry about odor control. I currently have two seedlings, if both these make it to harvest will they create enough stink where my exhaust fan vents that anyone would notice?

After paper towel germinating my seedlings and plating in 6' pots, the sprouts emerged on May 21 and May 23. The soil was not enriched with fertilizer but does have compost in it. When should I begin to add nutrients? My nutrients are General Hydroponics FloraNova Grow and FloraNova Bloom.

When should I move the seedlings to the larger pots?

Dude, your setup is looking choice!
If I may add however, with that exhaust, you BEST set up scrubbing now. I'm telling you, after a while (not long I might add) YOU will not smell the weed growing. But trust me, others will easily (and it wafts on the wind)!!
I say to set it up now 'cause if you have the money, its out of the way. Who knows what you may run into during your grow that will cost in a pinch. The last thing you want is smell vented to the outside world AND a problem with the plants (just sayin)...

As well, without scrubbing, that vent is low hanging fruit bro..be careful.

But seriously, like what I see, nice job!

Thanks man! I decided to hold off on the scrubber for now cuz I ran out of money. How long will it take before they start to get stinky?

I might have to make my own scrubber and hook it up into my exhaust fan.

Phusionsa was right... I do need some odour control! I have made a few enhancements to my set up, including a DIY carbon filter. My filter cost $25 to make and was really easy and has proven to be effective. I made it using a "galvanized angle boot"

(http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=911525&Ntt=911525&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&N=0&Ntk=P_PartNumber)

and lined the inside of the boot with aluminum screen. I then placed a mesh bag of carbon inside this boot about 1" thick. This whole contraption was then attached to my new cool tube. As the air is drawn through the cool tube from the grow room, it passes first through the carbon bag inside this boot.

DSC06344.jpg DSC06343.jpg DSC06346.jpg

I also am using ONA gel inside the room.

Other enhancements include the new 400W MH/HPS cool tube, adding some ducting to my intake vent to have the fresh air draw in at the base of my plants.

Nice, looking good :) nice job on the home made carbon scrubber majig! looks like it may get a biit cramped in there as your plants get bigger though?....

I'm a noob to this growing business too, its a bit daunting when you think about cost 'cause those mh and hps lights are well expensive...

I've set up a NFT hydro' system in my wardrobe, works well but god knows if it will grow anything. Running 4, 45 watt fluorescent plant growth tubes for now.

hope you don't mind if I stick a few pics up save me starting another thread with the same title :peace:

Post your pics freely, buddy...

Regarding the size of my room... Yes, it may get a bit tight... I will move the other stuff off the floor and put that big pot of basil outside. That will give me 3'x3'. I only have two full size plants going right now and two small clones in party cups.

I agree the cost is daunting... It better work out! :)

cool thanks 4north9! you got a grow journal thingy set up? :)

should be ok with only 2 plants, good thing about my space is its in a wadrobe so its easy access from the front XD
I'm gonna have a vegging area under the table if i ever get that far.

Hope it works out, gives another reason to work extra hard at it to get some good buds,

fingers crossed for the both of us!

Thanks to all who have taken a moment to comment on the various noob setups on display. It's really helpful to get some positive feedback when this is all so new to us! +rep to all who have commented.

I thought I'd give a bit more information on what has been happening with my grow.

My seeds germinated 34 days ago. When I got up to 6 nodes (on day 22), I used Uncle Ben's topping method to chop off the top of my plants above the 2nd node. I then rooted the cut tops as clones (using Clonex gel) and placed them in a couple of small peat pots inside a humidity dome kept warm with my ballast. The clones rooted well, and have been moved to party cups.

Since taking the clones and topping, the original plants have exploded from a couple of inches to 14" this morning along the two main branches created after topping (in only 10 days). I also have a wicked thick "trunk" forming that looks like it has bark forming on it. I'd say the trunk is 1/2" thick.

DSC06354.jpg DSC06356.jpg

I had a fungus gnat problem that I dealt with using "Bio Mist" insecticide. Unfortunately, some of this got onto the delicate foliage (should have only been a soil soak, but I forgot to turn off the fan!) and some of my beautiful perfect green suffered a chemical burn. :( The plants have rebounded above the damage though, and I will probably cut off the damaged tissue when they get a bit bigger. I nuked the fuck out of the gnats though:mrgreen:.

I have fed nutes at a very low strength once now, and will mix up a stronger batch for my next feed/watering. I have also used Super Thrive at half the recommended strength (but will stop using it after the next watering).

I understand that this strain will triple in height when I move to the flowering light cycle. Since my room is 7' tall (and the light eats up 14"), I'm banking on only 5' of plant height. So I think I will switch to flowering when they hit 20" tall.

Question 1: Does anyone think this is waiting too long to start flowering? I am not in a hurry...I want to maximize the plant as much as possible for the space I have.

Question 2: My two clones are pretty small right now (like 2")... should I keep these in veg until they are bigger or just flower the whole lot all at the same time?

Thanks all!

How long did your seeds take to germ' might I ask?

And from what I've read, you can pretty much flower whenever you want, and the bigger the plant is/more bud sites, the more of the good stuff you'll get... but don't hold me to that :)

Wait another 2 weeks, your yield will be MUCH greater. Just top them all again if you already have and let em go for a week or 2. Worth the patience. BTW your plants are looking great as always bro.

I started off with 5 seeds... buy my inexperience killed two pretty quickly. Seeds #2 and #4 are the two healthy plants now in my rorom. #1 and #3 sprouted, but never poked through after being planted. I probably manhandled them too roughly. Bummer.

The details are:

Seed #1: 3 days to germinate; sprout never emerged
Seed #2: 1 day to germinate; 1 day to sprout after planting
Seed #3: 1 day to germinate; sprout never emerged
Seed #4: 3 days to germinate; 3 day to sprout after planting
Seed #5: Dud. Did not germinate

Ah cool so not too long... lol I just started up a new batch, 0% germination on 40 seeds after 8 days :| so i'm leaving them where they are for a couple days more b4 chucking 'em out.

sad times :(
