1000 watt digital ballast questions

I have an extra 1000 watt digital ballast laying around doing nothing and I would like to get some use out of it. The problem I have is that I don't need all that power in the very small room I use. I already have a few 600 watt hps bulbs laying around and I would like to use them up.

My questions are:

1) Can I use my 600 watt bulb with the 1000 watt ballast?
2) What are the implications of doing so?

I definitely do NOT want shit to blow up. If it is unsafe I wont take any chances. I'd rather buy the 600 watt ballast instead of starting a fire.

The newer ballast have a knob to do what you want-----I'm certain Lumenitek does.

If not-----no-----must use rated bulb.
