some excellent advice there, a voice of experience.
when i used to grow in soil, before every watering i'd pick up the pots and lightly tap them on the floor. I was shown this method by a long time grower, as I was lucky enough to have people help me on my first grows, and he told me to do it because when we water soil can become compacted in certain parts. Causes problems with root mobility and nutrient transport in that part of the pot. A few light taps on the floor helps to loosen any parts that may be compacted.
If you water without tapping the pots, those compacted parts will become waterlogged and suffocate that part of the root system... may not affect the plant over all, as plants actually have the capability to close down entire sections of the root system if they want to. well, not if they want to, i imagine there is a trigger.
anyway... probably too much info... and the last time i tried to tell somebody to lightly tap their pots on the floor on a forum the other members went crazy, talking about plant stress, shock, hermaphrodites, all kinds of crazy shit. Not long afterwards I was banned for practising witchcraft.
