I'm trying to figure out whether to use soil or hydroponics.. As far as i have read hydro would take up less space which would help in my confined space. Also if I do use hydro Ive seen some videos on it and they never really say anything about what you put in the baskets over the water? Do u use soil in there or is it just the plant? This may be a stupid question for u guys but thanks for the help!

in the net pots (baskets) you put your growing media.

clay pebbles , tiny cubes of rockwool, suppose you could put soil but it would go in the water resevior and adjust ur ph and block your air stone

SOme people start with soil for their first grow. You learn alot about the plants and is easier to manage some say. I started with soil just to get the basics down. But that's just me.

I agree- but that's just my two cents, you are going to make a lot of mistakes your first grow (even if you are one of the first time growers that do amazing- you will fall on your face, guaranteed) Don't put all your money into your first grow- keep it simple, and I highly suggest using bag seed the first time.... seriously...

yes i totaly agree go soil first . Look if you fuck up one of your soil plants then you just lose one plant, but if you fuck up yiour hydro the whole crop can go to shit if you dont know what you are doing. You will learn alot from soil, This is like my fourth crop on soil and I am pleased.

good luck

absolutley start with soil, i have a couple bits of advice for the rookie grower that i wish someone would have told me when i started about 3 months ago. first off.. if you go cheap you grow cheap. do some research go to htgsupply.com for lights and other growing materials. id say you can get a sick ass start if your willing to put like 500 smackers into this project . if your thinking about using cfls i would say dont waste your time. cfls can produce sick bud but only if you know what your doing. save yourself the emotional stress and get a nice tube light florescent fixture for vegg and an hps for flower. the next thing is get foxfarm ocean forest potting soil, and foxfarm light warrior soil. total cost about 45 bucks! and than mix in some lime. that will give you a nice strong soil mixture that has a good ph and will foster nice strong root growth. also remeber LOVE KILLS PLANTS! love your plants less and they will love you more. i.e dont water too much, dont add nutes to early, and dont get in over your head only do whats comfortable for you. I know you didnt ask for all that advice but im just trying to help a brother out. im still a rookie too so my number one piece of advice is listen to the guys and gals on this forum! without their help i would have some dead ass plants and An empty wallet by now! dont be afraid to ask questions. even if you think they are dumb, and read the entire growfaq!!!

i am going to go against the grain and say - start with whichever one you want.
Another words, you may as well start learning the ins and outs of whichever system you choose to use. I say this because while many problems and mistakes overlap, there are also many soil/hydro-specific issues that you may as well start learning about from day one.

One example would be watering - with soil, watering is very, very important and you have to learn how much and when to water. With hydro (depending on the system) the amount and time of watering is usually not a concern.

I agree with the others in saying, don't get your hopes too high for your first grow or two. Even if you do a lot of planning and reading, you may not be successful (though you have a much better chance than trying to grow without any research).

having said all that, i'll add that while researching and asking questions is necessary and important, the only way you're going to get that all-important-and-valuable experience is to dig in and start growing! good luck and have fun!!

hey guys I just got 4 clones of afgooey. they looked a little pale yellow on some of the leaves, so i transfered them into 1 gallon pots with Fox Farm ocean forest with a little extra perlite and sand. under two flouro tube cool white..their is little noticable growth. my temp in the closet is about 60 degree F. any ideas? should it be a little warmer. a week has gone by since i transplanted them and also watered them one time until it came out of the bottom of the pots. i purchased a moist and ph meter for $8. i here that i need to wait til the soil dries out so that the roots will have to search for water and fill the pot. is that safe? please help
