Overwatering???? I'm clueless. Blue Mystic

So here's what's up.

I HAD 5 blue mystic growing under 2 UFOs and come CFLs. They started fast and looked great, but then they all died practically overnight except this one. I really, really want this little guy to survive.


So here's my set-up:

pH is at 6.5-6.8, adjusted with distilled white vinegar.
I used diluted Humboldt grow nutrients as per directed.
I use the same watering schedule I've used for years, watering every 2-3 days

In between waterings I've been giving it a light misting of micro-nutrients in proper solution.

I'm using Top soil and perlite as a growing medium and this plant is about 10 days old (should be bigger, too)

Never grown Blue Mystic before, it may be something strain related thats causing the problem or a deficiency. It sure looks like a deficiency but I'm reluctant to act on my suspicion.

It has splotches on the leaves you can see in the picture.

I flushed the soil out with water before I started growing. The nutrient bottle says new seedlings get 0.5ml/L I'm just doing it by the instructions.


I only waited 5 days to start watering and I think the soil may have been still wet, which is why I'm thinking over-watering. Never used these nutes before, either.

Probably overnute AND overwatered.

They're seedlings. Why don't you just have them in a peat/rockwool plug, or a solo cup? This will allow the grow medium to dry evenly and quickly, so you can water to your heart's content.

And you shouldn't add anything but ph balanced water, perhaps with a little seaweed extract, at this stage. You don't fertilize until the lower leaves start to yellow (a little bit).

I transferred into a solo cup and started a couple more seeds in a paper towel. Hopefully I can get a good yield outta these.

We thought the exact same thing because as soon as I finished transferring I checked this thread and saw your message.

Well it looks the same this morning, with a little new growth on top. I think it's safe to assume she's in recovery. Watering with only pH adjusted water.

^That's about all you can really do, is wait. I've still not figured out why nute manufacturers suggest feeding seedlings, in soil. It's not necessary, and 9 times out of 10, is harmful. Hmm.... *scratches head*

Yea if your using nutes already thats not to good.

Your should not give your plants ANY nutrients for at least the first 3 weeks, water has enough nutrients in it for seedlings.

Uh....... Not sure where you get your info, but water may have some elements in it crucial to growing, but not food like N-P-K. Most potting soils however will have enough nutrients to sustain a plant for a few weeks before needing to add more.

I follow Fox Farms feeding and start giving nutrients the very first week of life (Big Bloom) I would follow Fox Farm's advice before yours.


If you were to rely on soil or water only, good luck with your grow.

^LOL, No doubt, especially if we're talking 'pure' water, like distilled. There's nothing in there, except hydrogen and oxygen.


On the other hand....if you have a good soil mix, they won't need any nutes for quite awhile. I use FF OF, and they don't get anything except one or two doses of Calmag, during the first 4-5 weeks.(in 3-5 gallon pots)
