Too much NOISE!!

Ok all.... I have a 8inch canfan and the thing is LOUD!!! Pls help... I need to make this thing quiet down... The wife needs her beauty sleep, TRUST ME! lol

Some are using dimmers on fans to help them quite down but performance will suffer. If your fan is overpowered anyway it might be an option for you. Ebay had some for a good price but you can find one anywhere. Some times a slight voltage drop will drastically change the vibration of the fan.

Also check that the wheel is clean. A dirty fan loses performance and creates more vibration. Always filter the air going into the fan or at least clean the wheel every so often.

Thanks for the replies! It is the air going into the fan that is making the noise. The air coming out it fine.... The fan itself is not that bad.... I need the 8inch as the room is pretty big and I need that smelly air sucked out. Any ideas?

Yes you can. You might have to try some configs for best noise reduction like muffler then ducting then fan, ducting then muffler then fan etc
Good luck

*a carbon filter on the intake side of a fan helps lower noise a bit as well

Adding the carbon filter is the real deal. My 8" fan, with no sound box, like my others are in, is quieter than the other 3, by a long shot. Also, like they said, the muffler, and or insulated duct work going off the fan into an attic or somewhere else really helps.

Those things sure do sound like a jet engine when you just turn em on, don't they!

Mine doesnt seem to make too much air noise, but it makes a hell of a humming noise that transfers through the wall when I use a speed controller to turn it down.

So the humming is created from turning it down with the speed controller only? I've never used a speed controller b4 but I was planning to get 1. Sry if I sound dumb, so blazed right nowbongsmilie

Maybe switch around your times. To avoid that same problem with my cab, I run my lights from 5am to 11pm in veg, and 5a-5p flowering. Lights are on during peak power usage times and I can get to sleep at night.

Yeah. The motor hums when it's not given the full rated voltage, (i.e, using a speed controller). Certain motors do it and some don't. Can't remember which is which. (I have 3 six inch Valueline Centrifugal fans.) One of them hums louder than the other two, and I probably should open it up and check the connections on it. Of course it probably just doesnt like that spot in the room. I actually put layers of bungee cord rubber, thin foam, pond liner, and carpet on the feet of it's mounting brackets and mounted it to a stud on the floor, which made a huge difference. the vibration (hum) disappates much better on the carpeted floor than it does on a wall, IMO. I needed the fan low but usually I try to put them up high.
I always go way overboard on fans because I am a big fan of capacity. I oversize everything from the git go. So I have to turn the speed of them down to minimize the sound of the air movement. Each one is way over-sized so I know I am exchanging air rapidly enough.

I mostly built my room this way because I needed flexibility.
