All green plants contain chlorophyll - it is chlorophyll that makes them green - and it is the chemical properties of chlorophyll that is essential to photosynthesis, the process by which plants use sunlight to make sugar, which is then used to form body tissues.
Every molecule of chlorophyll contains one atom of the metallic element magnesium (symbol Mg) so the presence of Mg is absolutely essential for green plants to live and grow, and especially in our interests for cannabis to flower and form buds. An early sign of Mg deficiency is the yellowing of leaves - a loss of green colouring, OK. But there are lots of other causes of leaf yellowing, a nitrogen deficiency being one - but this is comparatively rare as we routinely feed nitrogen containing fertilisers. And whilst some plant fertilisers do contain Mg, many contain none at all.
So how do we protect against a deficiency of this vital element? Epsom salt is hydrated magnesium sulphate, MgSO4, any chemist will sell you a tin for pennies. And a little goes a long way. Give your girls a feed of Epsom salt at a strength of 1 teaspoon per gallon, just 2 or 3 times during the grow, and they will have more than enough magnesium to meet their needs. Some folks dig Epsom salt into their soil, but you really only need to provide a small amount.
