Are Nutrients Necessary?

as long as the soil is good,I grew outdoors for years and all I ever used was chicken shit mixed in the soil and I grew some killer plants,ph in the soil is very important,pot is often called weed and weeds will grow in just about any kind of soil and so will pot its just how good they grow,so I guess if you prep the soil before planting you can grow without nutrients I have. good luck

Even the old fashioned why used nutes. Pig, cow, chicken, horse manure. Compost teas. Dry mollasses. These are all nutrients.
your expectations are what matters most imo.. depending on what results you are expecting to get. if you want good quality bud and a lot of yields, there are many advisable threads on this forum that can help you step by step in doing so by using nutes. but if you are expecting a gram or two then i believe you can go simple.. might be worth getting nutes by the quarts depending on how much your'RE growing, though! i'm just a noob, throwing in my 2 cents..

That's completely up to you. If you do, you will get some success from all that I have studied. Some who mix in beneficial bacterias, earthworm castings, manure, blood/bone meals, ... before planting and just leave it at that will have better success than those who do a simple soil mixture & water only. This will ensure that you're atleast in quality soil with raw, organic slow release nutrients available to your plant. If your plant is not in fertile soil from the start, it WILL develop defecencies and effect yield/potency/flavor in your final product.
If you want to maximize your efforts and get the best yield & potency, you can help yourself in achieving this by purchasing some nutrients with ratios that are ideal for cannabis growing. These will include high Nitrogen products for your veg cycle, and high Phosphorus products during flower phase. You don't have to purchase from an expensive hydro shop if you don't want to. The same products are on eBay for much less, or you can buy cheaper garden products at your local nurseries. You'll just have to pay closer attention to their ratios as a lot of them will not be cannabis specific. Some will coincidentally be the ideal ratio by chance tho and have some good quality organics in them, so def check everything out and do your research!

The others are spot on though .... your soil has to have some kind of nutrient going on or the plants just starve , Yopu could make up a nice natural nuterient and mix it with some nice soil in a bucket and then dig a hole or put it in a pot and just plant into it .... and then water ... but at some point your going to have to replenish that nutrient when the plant has abbsorbed it all ... or your plant will starve .
With winter comming ...Im gonna set about making up some nice organic soil for next year ... Chicken shit has plenty of N and micros that are good for plants ...so i might give that a go

I was talking with a friend yesterday about getting Mono chemicals such as N P K and formulating my own mix .... you got any experience with that ?
I know i can get Mono's from hydro shops and garden centers ... But they are normaly diluted in small percentages ... I think Mono N is somehting like 17% ?... and i would asume that its diluted with water or some chamical that holds its ballance ? ..i dunno ?
you know anything about that ?

I have not used MONO chemicals. I prefer all organics, and use very synthetic mixes. If I was going to mix my own liquid, it'd be my own liquid organics & composts to make a homemade ORGANIC TEA. I think herbal tonics like that are some of the best things you can give plants, and are extremely hard to burn with.
For the Monos, I think it'll just come down to simple math which all the nutes should provide mixing instructions for. It'll come down to breaking down your strengths and desired NPK ratios in a couple simple math formulas to develop the required ML's per L needed to develop your homemade solution. Let me know how you do with that. Can't say I've talked to anyone who's done that. And if you want to private message me all the strengths, desired NPK ratio, and any instructions included I can surely try and help you with the formulas!

Def use some natural sources such as that! Great options! Just to give you an idea of my premix that I toss in my holes that I dig/auger in spring, is the following:
Potting Soil
Perlite
Peat Moss
Vermiculite
Earthworm Castings
Steer Manure
Organic Fish Emulsion
Organic Garden Lime Pellets
Organic Compost
Organic Blood Meal
Organic Bone Meal
Next time, I'll additionally add:
Organic Seaweed Extract
Organic Kelp Meal
Organic Bat Guanos
Organic Alfalfa Meal
Organic Sunflower meal
Organic Seabird Guano
Maybe some oyster shells?
You can get so creative with your own premixes! I'll do my own over buying Happy Frog or any of those @ $15-20/bag

It depends one what medium you intend to ( or have started ) to grow in , I took the simple easy option and went Canna Coco and the Canna Nutrient range ... Cheap ... does the job ... easy to manage and simple to understand ( I needed simple coz i was just getting started ) But as you can see from my above posts to Maz ... I'm allso looking for an alternative now that i know a bit more .
I would recomend Canna for ease of use ... Not sure they are the cheapest range ... But it's not that expencive and a lot of the products will last you well into a second grow .
I can point you to a very cheap site of a shop i use and now have an affiliation with thru my forum that gives a 10 % discount on top of the allready low prices .

The nutrients normaly come in a " Range " that you use from start to finish of the grow cycle ... They have diffrent amounts of chemicals that a plant needs in different stages of its life ... starting off with small amouts mixed with water and building up over time ... switching from grow nutrients to the ones needed when the flower stages start .
They come concentrated and you dilute the pre configured amount to the water your useing ... an easy example is " 1 Mil of Rhisotonic root stimulator for every 1 leter of water in your bucket " ... big bucket .. more mil's
Will you be growing in Pots ?
If so ... i would HIGHLEY recomend Canna Coco Pro ... its like soil ... but is nutaal ( Contains nothing but fibers ... no nutrient ) and contains nothing ... just a place for roots to live ... You the grower provide the nuts ...so your in control of what the plant has .... This makes it easy to put right any mistakes or if anything is un - ballenced .
That might be an info overload just from that one question ... But for a first time grower ... Coco is very forgiving and does wonders for the plants growth and end yeilds ... a lot of soil and hydro growers are switching to Coco as they can see the benifits of it and its eas of use
