okay, so I set up the HPS and plugged the ballast into a surge protector and of course blew up right up, sparks and everything, uggh. But to be on the safe side can I leave the ballast on the carpet or will there end up being a heat problem?

Sparking and blowing up isn't good. Where ever you got your ballast from should take it back and give you a new one. Ballasts aren't supposed to do that. If it was your surge protector, buy a new one and make sure it works before you plug a ballast into it.

Yea it was the surge protector, I just threw it away, I'm sure now after thinking about it that it wasn't meant for all of that wattage.

So long as your ballast wasn't ment to run on 240volts(which has a plug that doesn't fit into a standard grounded socket, so it wouldn't have worked anyway) the wattage shouldn't matter. It's just a bunk surge protector. Don't blame the wattage.

my 400 runs on a crapy little pc surge strip. What was arcing?
Man that thing poped, cracked I saw electricity and immediately unplugged everything, I could even smell it burning. But I can believe it was a bunk surge protector. Everything is plugged back in without the surge protector of course and is working just fine. I just wanted to make sure that it being on the carpet would be ok.

never bad to put something non flam under it. I have cement under the carpet. or even something to just get a little air under it to help it vent.

I keep mine on a glass pyrex dish that I got for like $3. Keeps it off the floor and handles heat well. Non flammable is key.
