what the heck is it with all the bagseed grows? Seeds from some random bag you get from some dude in the park, even if it's good smoke just seems like a good way to find a problem.

I know some folks don't have a choice but most of us do. So tell me... why would you want to grow from bagseed.

I'm not bagging on people. I just want to know the attraction. Clones or at minimum retail seeds seem easier and faster (clones) and more reliable to me. If I'm ignorant, straighten me out.

Because they are free, experimental, usually easy to grow and there is a surprise at the end.

....Bagseeds are good, imo.....I suggest to everyone wanting to grow their first time to use bag seeds. It's something like getting a used car to learn to drive...experiment until you know what the hell your doing before you spend the money on quality seeds, or a quality car :wall: .

Simple, they have no money to spend on internet seeds.

(esh, that was a blanketed statement)

Here we get seeds out of what the pusher sells, and we know good smoke. So the first few grows bag seed is less stress.

i'm a little surprised that the guy had to ask the question. this is a forum with so much diy and ghetto-rigs that it would be impossible for a lot of people not to consider the most free and available seeds. usually bagseed is saved from the best sacs, so the grower has at least an idea of what kind of smoke could be produced, and it's almost always better than the sac it came out of. a 50 dollar investment on seeds to someone growing in a 10 dollar stealth box with 15 bucks worth of cfls might be a little lopsided for their budget. when i learned how to drive i fucked up my mom's car before i bought my own, and guess what? i didn't fuck up my first car at all. i had already learned what NOT to do.

I avoid seedy stuff. If you can't come across with the sess then I'll wait. I understand the learning thing but wouldn't it be a better idea to really learn the right way vs the wrong way by at least starting with good seeds that you can know the provenance of so that you know what to expect? Starting with weak or even unknown genetics seems like it adds variables that would make it hard to net good results until you are a more experienced grower. I will agree that starting from seed is great, I've started a few from seed but always had to kill them before harvest. Now I've started with clones because I can. If I couldn't then I'd probably buy retail seeds or make a friend and get a cutting.

So to be more specific: why bagseed over some retail or even seeds from a known strain? Is it like gambling and you want to see what you get? More for fun than for production. That seems to be the consensus.

EDIT:
I guess I could re-phrase it as, did those of you who've done bagseed grows do it because that was it for options or because you wanted excitement, adventure and really wild things?

Some of the best strains are ancestors of mexican shwag bagseed.

Breeders got these seeds, picked the winning phenos, breed, repeat.

Eventually you get great product.

Dude I'm a grower. If I got nothing to grow I go fucking nuts. So if I've got some shit seed laying around, fuck yeah I'm going to grow it.

K, so with that, if you are a grower then why not do the whole cloning thing and save the seed germing, sexing, etc... hassles? I understand that as a "grower" where it's your hobby that you may have better seed stock laying around but I'm talking specifically about bagseed grows which would tend to suggest at minimum variable quality. Still, as a grower, why not just take clones and periodically bring in new genes with seed born plants? Do you do any breeding of them or just like growing from seed?
