SOG Sea of Green in a Big Room with lots of plants

Ok, so I ordered (6) 400watt HPS lights and a bunch of different strains. I still need to build my room which will actually be two spaces, one for flowering and one for veg/clones/mother. The veg room will be done under a total of 4 T5 lights...(2) 2ft 8 bulb units and (2) 4ft 8 bulb units.

My flower room can be any size up to 16'x16'

Here is where I need advice...should I veg to 1foot and then transplant into 12 inch x 12 inch 5gallon square pots (roughly 100 plants this way if each light covers 4'x4') or veg shorter into smaller pots with more plants, or veg 1foot still but into smaller pots and more plants?

Basically, how would you setup (6) 400watt HPS lights for Sea of Green? Also, which strain would you start with and why (of the ones I ordered)

Strains Ordered

Mount Cook - Kiwi Seeds

Night Shade - Barney's Farm

Sensi Star - Paradise Seeds

White Berry - Paradise Seeds

Himalayan Gold - Green House Seed Co

Super Lemon Haze - Green House Seed Co

Chocoalte Chunk - T.H. Seeds

O.G. Kush #18 - Reserva Privada

LSD - Barney's Farm

Big Bud - Sensi Seeds

Twilight - Dutch Passion

Cheese - Home Grown Fantasies

Vanilla Kush - Barney's Farm

I have three 400 watts, 1 for my clone/seed booth, and the other two in a 6 x 5 foot flower space. My first grow did fine in that set up, with 6 plants in the space. Right now, I have the 2nd grow going, clones from the first grow, total of 15 plants in more a of a SOG. I don't have anything in the booth right now, so I am using all 3 400W in the flower room, and it is plenty of light.

If I were you, I would set up just one light in your veg area, as the plants are small. Use max lights in your flower room, although heat can be a problem with more light. 5 lights should cover about 10 square feet per light, so size your grow room accordingly. Mine is sized for a space of about 3 x 5 per light, so a five light array would be about 15 x 5, leaving plenty of room in a 16 x 16 space for plant care.

Thanks for the advice. However, I have 4 sets of T5 lights for the clones/mothers. All 6 HPS lights will go into the flowering area. More or less I am looking for advice on how many plants can grow well under this many lights and in what size bags. I was thinking of 2-3 gallon grow bags and craming them in there true SOG style...maybe 100 plants under the 6 lights...Not sure if I should clone straight to flowering, veg to 6 inches then flower, or veg to 1 foot then flower??? I know I saw a guy with 20 plants under 1 400HPS light yield almost 10 ounces and there was plenty of room to spare...no crowding at all. He went from clones straight to flowering...no veg period.

Thoughts ANYONE?

6 lights is a lot.

If I had to do SOG I would just set up flood trays, maybe one for each light or one tray for 2 lights. I dig the no veg time, that's what I'm doing right now too. My set up made my plants stretch too much in the first 2-3 weeks, Like they would go from 4 inch clones to 32 inch plants. I have been using a foliage feed to keep them shorter that has worked great, sometimes too good. So i am still figuring it out completely.

Cooling your lights will be small challenge if you don't want to go all out with equipment. Straight lines are most efficient for air flow so take that into consideration. ..........

I don't think a single 400 watt can produce 10 oz "with room to spare"

100 plants is a lot of work my friend, what time do you want between harvests, with how many plants per cycle?...I would love to see this setup

The main critique I've got is your lighting. Instead of 6x400w, 4x600w would be much better. 600's are far more efficient if you're planning a space like that. I would go with the OG Kush for a SOG in that set up if I had to choose. It's a hardy Indica strain that grows short and squat with great yields for it's size. Relatively short flowering period, too. Sativa dom. strains aren't as favorable for SoG because they grow stretchier and take longer to flower.

How much experience do you have with growing? From the lights you ordered and your questions I'm just guessing you havn't done too many grows and I'd like to caution you that maybe you're taking on too much by starting out with such a big grow. But it sounds like youre set on doing it so I would recommend 4 hps's in your flower and 2 in your veg for any plants over 2 weeks old, and have under 2 weeks on flourescents. You're going to need a kickass ventilation setup and expect electric bills over $300 a month.

Thanks for the tip on the OG...the other I thought of doing was Big Bud and Chocolate Chunk...I have heard good things about those.

Unfortunately it's too late to get anything other than the 400 watt lamps...they're already ordered.

Basically what I mean by "room to spare" to spare is he didn't have the plants packed into his space at all.

I realize 100 plants is a lot, I plan to do one cycle at a time. Meaning I will do a full batch (100 plants or whatever I plan) for the full flowering time...I am not going to try to stagger my setup and get a batch every couple weeks or whatever. I think it would be easiest if all the plants start and finish at the same time.

Yeah, pretty much have my mind set on this like you said. I myself am not too experienced but my friend who is helping me setup has been doing this for over 5 years sea of green style. The ventilation system I ordered is a 6 inch (around 500cfm) vortex and for odor control I ordered an 8 inch uvonair corona ozone generator. The setup will be in a basement and will vent into the chimney. I hope you are wrong about the electric bill but you may be correct. Good thing is that the building it is going in won't be using normal things that run up elec bills like computers, refrigerators, airconditioners, televisions, or radios...basically the entire elec bill will just be from the setup.

Also, I don't plan to veg long...I am hoping I can just veg under the T5 lights and be fine.

well. Id have gone with 600 watters. But whats done is done. You will be just fine vegn clones/motners under ur t5s and what not. But i dont think that 1 fan is gonna cut it, Unless it stays really cool in your basement which with winter coming is a bonus. And id def go with the og18. Unless i didnt see...what soil/nutes u using?

Yeah, like I said too late for the 600s but if I don't like the way the 400s work I can always upgrade...as for the basement, yes I live in a quite cold climate...even summer isn't too hot. I can always pick up another fan if the one doesn't cut it...they are relatively inexpensive.

I'm using basically everything on this page per my friends recommendations (honestly that is one area I am really unfamiliar with and will be reading a lot about in the coming weeks), this is all he uses apparently. http://www.hydroempire.com/store/nutrients-c-6_47.html

For those too lazy to click the link it is basically all the dry nutes that HydroEmpire has on their website

SuperTea

Budswell

ANY advice about nutrients is def appreciated! Thanks for chiming in guys, appreciate the feedback.

3-4 feet. depending on how things fit...probably closer to 3. I just saw yours and it appears to me if you switch to bags instead of pots you could cut down cost and fit more plants.

Here is a link to 3 gallon bags http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/itemdesc.asp?ic=COGB3

Also a link to a cheap easy way for a drain table/drip tray https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/378720-diy-drip-tray-soil-grows.html

sweet thanks for the link but i already bought liek 300 dollars worth of pots. and as for the drip tray i already have a draining system for my trays. ill post some pics tomorrow when the lights come back on thank.

So your just going to daisy chain all you lights to one fan in the flowering room??

If so you will have major problems with heat on the last 2 lights... Good luck and keep us posted. JR

wow man you are gonna have one heck of a nice set up it sounds like...

so i have been playing around with this single cola growing for a while, i have tried 4" spacing using rockwool cubes packed on a tray and same cubes up to 12" spacing...
and for me i found that a 8" spacing works about the best...
looking back in my journal the first grow was 142 plants in a 4x4 tray under a 1000 and i got 1 3/4 lb..
the next i decided to grow 80 of the same strain on the same table and i got 1lb 11oz of way better buds...

Cool, my drain system is one of the things I have not really put too much thought into until recently...more pics of different setups is good food for thought.

Thanks. As for the fan/heat issue with the back lights, I think you are correct and I may go ahead and just order another fan right away to avoid the issue straight away. Thanks again.

Thanks. Another thought I have been having is possibly running two or three different strains just to see how they all react to my grow style. I will have to do a bit of research first though because I would like to keep the canopy relatively uniform throughout the room. BTW, I saw your thread prior to your post here...good stuff, I love it.

EDIT: Like I said, I did look at your thread (but did not read it entirely) and was curious what light you have on your mothers/clones. TIA

heres some pictures of my drainage system....

i put my trays on some pallets (8 to be exact) and put a slight slope on them. then i drilled holes in the corner of my trays and siliconed pvc fitting to them.. put a 250 gph pump on it and ran it under my stairs to my drain for my sink....

Hope i gave you some good ideas. and heres some pointers if you go this rout -- slope the trays about two inches from top to bottom on an 8 foot tray(i only did an inch and the water pools in some spots)----Make water flows freely into your pump because it will not suck air to get the water to it(i made that misake)

hope i helped GOOD LUCK

Thanks. This gives me some ideas how I can get mine to flow to my basement drain.

hey be carefull with different strains in SOG it could be a logistical nightmare..
Yeah, I want things to be nice and easy. My friend who is helping me (and does SOG himself) will get the mothers going while I am setting up my room...Between him and I we will have around 6 (or more) mothers so hopefully that will give us some insight on which ones we will clone.
