Well, you cant buy any centrifugal fan for $30 unless you find it at a garage sale. Your best bet is to get the 6" duct fan at Home Depot/Lowes.

I've got bad news, unless you can find something fairly used, $30 is simply not going to cut it. The cheapest way is going to be a high quality booster fan like an active air. Remember a booster fan rating is for free air flow. Used as a stand alone fan, the actual CFM is about HALF the rating in the box.

I'd go 8" booster for around $50 or a 4" vortex style fan for $70. Your going to want at least 150 true cfm to keep things cool. Your plants will thank you later for investing in good gear now.

Hope this helped.

Just ssethe above post. That $30 HD fan is a piece of fucking garbage. I tried it once. You will get about 30cfm out of it. Biggest piece of junk I ever came across. (and I have come across alot of junk as I'm a complete slut :) )

Agree w/legallyflying, if you have the budget for it then spend the chee$e. Your plants will thank you for it.

It's not garbage if you use it as intended. I use it to boost AC flow to my room, and it works great. Sure the CFM ratings are too high, but that thing moves some air.

OP, a 400CFM centrifugal is only about $80, that is a good place to start

ok well i found a fan i havent bought it yet
it is a marine boat bilge blower 250cfm rating
im sure there are better things but for less than $30
and its inline i could mount it on the side of my cab
so i think it would work ive seen small case with only small pc fans

go get the damn 8" duct fan from lowes i use it on a cabinet 3 times the size pulling air through a 10x16 carbon filter and i exchange 8.5 times the volume of air the cabinet contains in less then 4 min, some people really need to figure out facts before they type some crap that has no basis of fact, free air the ductstat fan can move 375-425 cfm, the company will always under rate the fan so the customer will buy large models, this was reported to me by one of the sales and marketing reps for suncourt, the makers of the duct fans at lowes shit the box over rates the fan @ 500cfm, the air coming out of my fan after the cabinet and carbon filter measures almost 13mph with a digital air wind speed gauge i use for hiking in the olympics

LxWxH= cubic feet, divide by 5 to get proper cfm fan.
68"x 26 1/2"x 14 3/4" = 15.38 cf / 5 = 3.07 cf
So you need a fan that is rated at least 3 cfm.
It's that easy. Late.
Of course this depends on what type of light you plan to use.

I have a closet 26wx18dx44h w/ a 150 hps in a basement, I have the ballast next to the closet, light in the original outside fixture w/ a pc fan venting into a duct out the side of the closet.another pc fan in the top of the closet draws air out the top(passive vents intake air from the bottom). a third PC fan inside blows the air around. temps go over 80 only during the hottest part of summer. basement normally stays in the low 60s. i dont use it often, mainly to quarantine clones from a friend who often has mite problems.or to keep a male.

the light i will be using is this oneView attachment 1260533
so why do you say that one fan sucks
have you used it ive seen one and it blows
more air than any pc fan i have seen
and its cheaper than the 6" duct fan from lowes
and i want to put a carbon filter on i found a BA
one on icmag.com it looks better than any other diy
carbon filter

Im having some heat issues right now. Ive bought so many of them damn lowes fans its rediculous. I have the 4" duct booster ones that blow "80 CFM's. I have 2 up top for exhaust and 2 down below for intake. Using a 250 watt HPS it still gets over 95 in there. I took out the 1 from the bottom and just have a 1 intake fan and 1 passive vent. after doing that, it dropped to about 90. oh, and my grow area is 22" x 22" x 4'6".

I wasted so much money buying fans, that i wish i just bought a good fan from the begining. I will be getting this over the weekend. http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=55976

you should take the ballast out of the reflector and attach it outside the grow cab and try that air hockey table fan. that could work. just make sure you have a large intake hole.

first off take your fans and set them sidexside they make up about 8" wide over all, right, now put a 8" fan next to them which is going to move more air with less static pressure, its like asking your self what moves more water a 12" pipe or 2 6" pipes, take the fans back to lowes and get in store credit and buy the 8" duct fan, i use a 600 watt light in a 3x3x6 cabinet and i barely hit 82 degrees on the hottest days in mids summer, and i use only one 8" duct fan, oh and the scientist that supplied the formula for finding volume of a area, your so smart lol, those 4" fans only move maybe 45 cfm which is not enough, always run a passive intake, you dont want positive pressure in your cabinet you want a negative pressure zone it put less static pressure against the fan blabes and work more efficently not to mention the natural effects of thermal heat transfur in the movement of fresh air from the bottom of the cabinet to the top

quit buying non vented hoods for your lights people you are just creating more issues to solve and spend money on, oh smokinjoe113 that fan you posted with the link is junk for the price they are selling it for the 8" fan moves just as must air and it cost $28-34, as for diy filters umm....chris my diy filter cost me $40 to build and 20 to rebuild i have grown 5 cycles/ 5+lbs on the same diy carbon filter and have no smell, when the companys see us not buying there over price products " most of which are junk" then they will drop there prices

Maybe mod the hood and put a 4" flange where the vent louvers are attach a hose and run one of those cheep inline booster fans? That would take a lot of heat out before it got to your plants. Also the idea of remoteing the ballast is a good idea.

You dont need a whole lot with only a 150 and moving the ballast outside the cab. I used to vent something similar (grew in water softner salt container 11"x11"x36") with 4 PC fans (2 in - 2 out)and a 150 security light where I moved the ballast outside. It was marginal but it worked. ~80 deg and was silent (I also bought a PC fan controller that had 4 temp sensors that would turn the fans on when temps got high and could change the fan RPM's for slient running). Sound/Smell are other issues you want to consider.
