How to Not Get Busted Thread (help me build up this info)

Alright, I'm from Canada and writing some fiction and here's my understanding of how it works in the USA (my story is based in the NE, like a NYC type area or Philadelphia):

• It's all bull unless they come with a search warrant.
• Smell may warrant attention, but will not warrant an actual search warrant.
• Only trimmings in trash and this sort of thing will warrant an actual search warrant. (?)
•*Stinky stink can be avoided by ventilating into rooms which are otherwise uninhabited.
• 6 or less plants is just a citation

My understanding from skimming various threads is that the following DO NOT warrant an investigation:
•*smell
•*power usage
• fly-over heat trace (supposedly only used to find large plantations, and even then just a method of pinpointing hotspots)

So what actually DOES warrant an investigation? I really want to get a lot of thoughts on this, as I'm sure a lot of people can get practical use also out of a thread on avoiding capture. I am of the opinion that the police really don't want to arrest growers, as I know there are many police organizations that campaign against "Prohibition". I'm sorry if I'm a bit ignorant but in Ontario it's all easy-peezy lemon haze squeezy, so please supplement this information. I am seriously considering building a consolidated website resource for marijuana enthusiasts, because the information is so widespread and difficult to attain, so I may send you a PM asking if I can quote you (by username of course) on the website. I am an experienced web & graphic designer.

Don't grow in an apartment. Smell can warrant an investigation!!!! Neighbors are notorious for calling police about smells and your property management has 24/7 access to your grow op and will call the police. Power usage can warrant an investigation!!! Power companies are encouraged to report suspicious electricity ratings. I.E. your power bill averages $100 a month then jumps up to $600 a month.

Check out the movie, The Union. There are a lot of VERY interesting and informative facts in that documentary.

Major jumps in electricity does warrant police to investigate. This, of course, would only be an issue with major grow-ops. As for smell, I know that you can get busted. A few of my friends used to smoke in their apartment buildings and have been searched due to neighbours reporting them. As for the over-head heat signature, that also warrants a search. It's pretty much the same with the electricity bill; you'll only get busted if you have a major grow-op, not a couple 250w HPS lights for personal use.

This is all so much harder-sounding than what a lot of people I know have said. And actually in PA and NY apartment landlords can't access an apartment without at least 24 hours' notice to the renters, so that's one claim down.

So let's talk KILLING that smell. Instead of a carbon filter, can venting into the house itself choke out the smell?

Also, how much of a grow would you need to create a significant heat trace?

Finally, take into consideration that it in wintertime and summertime electric usage is already high. At least in winter, heat usage could be offset by the heat from the lights being distributed throughout the house-- especially if one were to vent their exhaust into the rest of the house, as I mentioned. Thoughts?

Also, bryancollier; although I have already seen The Union on Netflix, I agree that it is a terrific film and one of the best films on marijuana. If you found that interesting, you may also like the book "Bud Inc", which takes a closer look at some of the key players in the Union scene.

its not really how much heat, but what you do with it. A hole in the wall thats constantly pumping out traceable heat is not normal dryer use. if its vented out through a chimney or into the attic, it would be much harder to stick.

venting into the house would just make your whole house reek, i would say a whole room with 4 1000s would cause significant heat but so would a laundry room

You'd need a pretty serious grow-op to get busted by heat tracers. You'd easily need to be producing several kilos of dried product every couple of months.

And of course in the winter this could actually replace traditional heating. Well IDK if you've ever seen the Trailer Park Boys, but these characters are inspired by them, so assumedly they wouldn't mind their whole house smelling of straight ganja.

This is my thought. Smell rises, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I understand it, so then you could even just create a natural draft in the ceiling on the opposite (living) end of the house, and the heat would be evenly dispersed (as well, the temperature would have dwindled by the time it reaches the roof). Assuming a top-floor apartment, this would be far above street level and above all the noses of any passersby, besides the scent would die down as it disperses.
Please let me know if you see that as sound logic-- or otherwise.

Side note, a grow house near my mother-in-law's place got busted recently, and it was entirely because they didn't give a damn about the smell. She had been saying it was going to get busted for a couple years by that time. Personally, I would think that after a year you'd want to move on to another location so that any suspicious neighbours don't have time to stew on the possibility that you might be doing, well... what you're doing!

im sure a 500 buck jump a month would cause suspension . I run a 1000 watt light , 70 watt light , 60 watt light , 435 cfm exhaust fan , and a few other things in my room . The power bill only jumped 60 bucks a month . And honestly the power companies want your money more than anything else.

Police need a warrant to access your power records, and if they have that then you are fucked anyway and they are just building a case against you.

Stop scaring the kids.
