I want to make something clear to everyone who thinks LED's are so much more efficient than HID lights. a 850 watt LED setup uses the EXACT same amount of electricity as a 850 watt HPS ( If there were such a thing).

I am sub'd. I have never used LED and don't consider it a viable solution YET, but during the summer I cannot run all of my HIDS at once due to the heat. If you can produce over 1 pound of dried and cured bud than perhaps i will look into getting a small setup, but if you aren't able to achieve that then i will wait for a better technology to come along. No pressure.

It all comes down to the efficiency of HID and LED. What happens with each watt of energy consumed. HID lights give off more light watt per watt than LED's (although that gap has closed dramatically and some LED prototypes are now more effiecient). The big issue is usable light. HID's give off most of their light in the 560-620 (green/yellow/orange) spectrum which is pretty much entirely unusable by Chlorophyll A & B. This unusable range actually acounts for more than 50% of the lumens given out by even the best spectrum HID bulbs. So although they give off more light per watt than LED's the amount of light usable in photosynthesis is less per watt than LED's.

I think the big issue thus far has been raw output. Although HID is only 50% efficient in producing light usable by the plants, the sheer brute force of their output gives them the advantage because LED's could just never put out enough light. However now that high power chipsets (3W led's) are now available that is changing, and a few people, myself included, are putting them to the test.

12 days into flower... raised the lights today about 2"... big feeding, the girls are getting thirsty! Bud production appears to be in full swing!

Considered putting some mylar on that stud wall? Can't hurt to concentrate all the light possible :-)

it's going to be interesting...

hey no drama your not really correct in statement about 850w led vs 850w hps ,most 600w hps actually draw between 650 and 700w ,and a 400w hps draws between 440 and 480 ,so u have to add this in to any thoughts /statements also added cooling watts used with hps

Dude, i think everyone is clear on that. Of course 850W=850W. Efficiency is a measurement of the lumen-to-watt ratio, not the watt-to-watt ratio.

luminous efficiency is the measurement of visible light produced by electricity. When it comes to comparing LED to HID in this instance what is really important is the intensity and amount of absorbable light.

also penetration depth is key... which is why thus far the HIDs have outperformed on a weight to power ratio thus far... but maybe with the 3w cells it will become viable... like i said... fingers crossed!

Thats a great idea....More Mylar the better the stuff is perfect for maximum light reflection :) Also if you hang a few 250W Envirolite CFL's (red spectrum) in there, they will help adjust the spectrum to give a higher bud production rate, either way if you use supplement lighting or you don't, I'am still interested to see the results you get...What nuitrients are you using? - STELTHY :leaf:

He'd said earlier (although I can't find it now) that he was due to come down Christmas Eve or Christmas day. Based on the trigger date and that it is Kush I was thinking that was a little early but the CO2 does mature things quicker so that might be right.

It's actually due to come down Jan. 2nd as I vegged a week longer than I had originally hoped to.

How are they growing so far compaired to your HID setup? ya know, overall growth, stretching, bud sites, bud production?? I understand it's early, I'm just curious that's all.

Looking good LEDBuDGuy!

I have 2 Pineapple express Under 1x 250W Quad Band LED light; Flowering from Seed. :>

Just over 4 weeks and they are about 1 1/2" tall and are somewhat overwhelmed with hairs at this time.
I'll upload a pic of their progress tonight.

Looking forward to watching your progress!
