obtaining good soil for indoor/outdoor growing

the only store in my area that carried foxfarms soil closed a few weeks ago. the nearest store is about a 200 mile round trip. i don't want to use some cut-rate soil in my buckets but i don't want to have to ship big bags of dirt through the mail if i can help it, either.

is it worth it to mail-order foxfarms soil-- at least a bag or two of the most heavily fortified stuff-- or should i try to make my own mix, or settle for something lesser, or just bite the bullet and make the trip? what would you do?

can you get roots organics? i found 3 hydro stores in my town when i thought there was only 1... i would look around some more.

Any of your typical potting mixes you can find will work well. Miracle Gro potting mix works very well.

i dunno about that. last time i had two buckets full of fox farms and two with miracle gro and the ones in foxfarms turned out noticeably better...

A lot of others here have not had any issues with MG. I use both. I don't see a difference in my plants between MG and FFOF. Besides, even if what you said was true, it doesn't matter. This person no longer has access to FF soils.

i heard that the slow-release fertilizers in miracle gro lend a strange taste to the bud. all 4 plants got mixed together once they got harvested so i couldn't really tell. the bud did taste a little weird but that could be the way it got cured, or anything. miracle gro makes a number of different soils; which one are you talking about? the pricey organic one isn't supposed to be used in containers, i thought. or at least, i'd have to add perlite or coco coir or something.

I'd make the trip man, shipping a bag of soil is a hefty charge. If you have to ship, check out coco coir. It's sold in compressed bricks most of the places I have seen it online. Should make for easier/cheaper shipping.

find a good base soil and then do subcools supersoil.

Chances are if he can't find fox farm near him, he might not be able to find all the stuff for subcools recipe.
