Senate Bill S510, Food Control

Don't we all feel safer now? It is so nice to know that my masters...I mean government...are looking out for me.

The two wingbats from my state voted exactly how I expected. They are a couple of progressive control freaks and always will be. There is no way in hell that this will ever get repealed, so I guess it is time to build a strong black market based on food. Anyone saying that the democrat party is for "the little guy" is just plain deluded. Not a single dissenting vote from THAT party. The republicans were not any better, but I expected that from them. Looks like almost the entire senate is bought and paid for by big pharma and big farma. 25 nays, but in reality they could afford to do that. This bill's passage was guaranteed anyway.

I wonder if the feds will start raiding the virgin food seed banks now? After all, if it is not GMO...it must be unsafe. Once they get rid of virgin seed, there will be no self sustainable crops available. Sounds delightful!

I have to say, this is a pretty uninformed, uneducated, paranoid conversation for the most part. I realize there are 'conspiracies' out there, and a larger agenda.... BUT this addresses corporate neglegance in the form of tainted food due to mass production. The Tester ammendment that was added to it exempts farms grossing under 500,000 dollars a year..... so as far as this bill goes, I'm pretty sure farmers markets are safe for now. And to cite some big name support not inpolitics- Michael Pollan, THE spokesman for small organic farms..... With that said, this bill may not be perfect but it FINALLY addresses that there is a difference in safety and quality between conventional large scale farming and small scale sustainable family farming. Now, inform yourself and lets have a real conversations. Peace

OK, here's a list of how the Senators voted. I feel betrayed by so many I've been in support of. I'm shocked. What the hell are they thinking?
They need the money/corporate support to try to save their jobs...time for torches and pitchforks!

Somebody better call in Jesse Ventura
This gave me a nice chuckle...Thanks.

Most of this thread was before the Senate amendments. Closing every neighborhood Farmer's Market would scatter the flock!

While it does make it shinier...even you admit it is not perfect...so what was the rush to push through a vote??? Oh yeah...cuz they care!....RIGHT! This is not about food safety

I am always a bit suspicious when "strangers" come to a site about growing pot...find themselves in the depths of a politics thread...create an account...and post their 1st or second comment ever on some odd topic...on a site about growing pot...

I informed myself and the 500,000 is GROSS INCOME which means jack shit for profit. I live in a state dominated by agriculture and i don't know a single farmer who does less than 1 million gross per year. Hell these farmers buy $400,000 tractors every few years. A farm only doing 500k in business a year is probably only profiting 40-50k a year, which for a family of 4 certainly isn't living the high life. Remeber its 500k GROSS, not net profit.

From the above link... "The only possible “quick fix” would be a unanimous consent agreement in the Senate to strike that revenue-raising provision from the bill—but Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) has already stated that he will oppose, so unanimity will be impossible."

Wanna bet Sen Coburn receives some generous campaign donations and re-considers...

Yeah, you can bet there'll be some sort of arm twisting.

Thats why some politicians won't go along, they are holding the wild card and want to be paid more (Bribed) for their vote.

Nice, attack my post count and dont address anything I said in my response. If you must know I use rollitup as passive learning material for growing, not for politics. This popped up in google when researching s510.
I am not denying that many politicians have their own agenda but they still respond to constituents and organizations. Do you have any idea the grassroots movement behind this bill? There are many many many thoughtful CARING individuals that worked to get the ammendments added. And secondly, like I said earlier, this bil finally addresses the difference between small scale family ecological ag and industrial corporate 'farming'. Which if you know how the law works, sets the stage for future legislation supporting small farming and putting tighter regulation on destructive industrial ag. Come on now, lets have a real conversation with some facts rather than all emotion, were not a bunch of 'teabaggers' (I hope not).

Well you didnt inform yourself about the differences between industrial farmers and REAL small scale environmentally and health concious farmers. I for one have worked on small organic farms and know for a fact its hardly possible to gross even close to 500,000. The guys buying 400,000 tractors are growing Genetically modified corn and soy for the most part- depleting our soils, water and health. Soda pop, dorito, frito lay farming vs fresh healthy non pesticide laden FOOD farming. Like I said, inform yourself on the whole issue not just numbers if you want to be taken serious.

It's not the reasonable things in the bill, it's all the outrageous inanity that is the problem. And there is PLENTY.
