PLEASE Help... Continued Temp Problems, Plants at Risk of Dying

So I replaced my frozen-over AC with a fan which supposedly works on a thermostat, but the goddamn things is wildly inaccurate, and my room temps vary anywhere from 87 (and even 90 on occasion) to 68 degrees over several hours. The fan pushes in really cold air, which is good, but it doesn't know when to stop, and the temperature at which it STARTS working also seems completely random.

PLEASE someone tell me where I can get a cheap temperature controller, because the alternative is I buy an air-cooled hood for my light, which is a whole lot of work on top of another $150 investment that I really don't want to make. This 1000W light is making temps crazy, and I've really been through the lot trying to fix the problem, and my plants are lucky to have survived this far in. I see many hermies in my future.

I can see you're writing from Cali. Well, there's one other reason: too fucking cold. It's below freezing here, I'm in the Northeast.

Check these out, I used to use it for homebrewing, Now I use it to control an intake fan to cool the grow room during the "day" I have it set to cut out below 70F.

or if you want it prewired ready to go...

Works like a champ!!

is your ballast in the same room or remote? this adds a lot of heat as well. a CAP controller for just cooling (saves a few bucks over the heat/cool/all in one units) is @ $70 http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=CAP+temperature+controller&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=17649852184620685663&ei=oaUHTf3qJoa4sQO856zADg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CD8Q8wIwAw#

also, pushing in that much cold air, you need to make sure it mixes well with the ambient temp. placement of the controller and it's sensors determines on/off cycles, so the air should be well mixes around the controller to avoid large swings (eg: placing the controller in line with the cold air will give false readings to the true growroom environment and not adjust correctly)

Yeah, the issue turned out to be that the temperature is so cold outside, with that cool air drifting in and not too much air being blown toward the thermostat on the intake fan, it was pretty much a wild card as to when it would turn on. I aimed a box fan at it, and that helped a lot. Now the only issue I'm dealing with is the enormous change in temperature around the cooling unit... I laid in a gutted cardboard box to mimic the motion of an air conditioner, and I'm considering throwing in some PC fans to really get it right. (Two to exhaust cold air when it comes in from the main intake, one to blow in warm air from the room so the fan has an accurate idea of the temperature). At the moment, I just haven't had my proper dosage of meds and I'm on like day 3 of no sleep. I can't smoke weed because I want to make sure I pass a piss test for a job I'm taking on, and so I'm pretty much screwed. So we'll leave further fiddling to later. It kind of sucks having to go in and check on things so often, and it really sucks that even with a humidifier running full-bore I can't get the humidity when the intake's on to go beyond fucking 20% >.< Mais c'est la vie. I'll be ordering a cooling unit like the one mentioned above for fermenting, but I have that that's pretty much the same price as the ones made specifically for hydroponics. Nonetheless, thanks all the same.

Everyone do good... I finally feel like I MIGHT be able to sleep... which means probably not. Sorry if I sound dead, it's because I nearly am.
