Venting a 1000w HPS (Closet Grow)

So I have been researching and I wanted to get some opinions about my personal grow setup in regards to ventilation.

I have a 6x6x8 room and I will be mounting a 1000w HPS with an air cooled hood early next week.

The air will be pulled into a carbon filter, pulled through the hood, and exhausted into the attic. The ambient temps outside the grow room is 68-70 degrees.

Will the grow room stay cool enough using passive intakes?

Also, I have 4x 10inch wall mounted air circulators in the room moving air around vigorously.

Do yall think this will be adequate? I've never messed with anything over 400watts.

Filter>>Fan>>Hood>>Exhaust. What size fan? I would think at least a 465cfm. With lose due to restriction you should still be able to exhange the air in the room every 5 minutes or so....

SO you would recommend I blow air through the hood to exhaust? Or should I pull air through the filter and hood? I'm using a 6" inline rated at around 450cfm.

Pull through filter and push through hood then exhaust. To me a 1000 watt bulb is alot of heat to be pulling through the blower. I know many do will no problems. Still it seems the additional heat would shorten the motor life. But thats just me...

Thanks Cowboy. I was going to purchase a Swamp Cooler, but I'll wait and see how this goes. I have a female 4 weeks into flower in the same room under my 400w HPS so I'm looking for a speedy transition, I just want to be prepared for any temp issues. That girl is depending on me right now! =)

Your welcome. You may need to supplement intake air with a small fan. But it sounds very feasable with what you have to work with. Sealing the hood well helps also. Some seals need some exterior taping around the rim to be air tight. Especially important when blowing through the hood...

Do you mean purchase an AC unit? a Swamp cooler works by evaporating water into the air as it passes through. This lowers the temps only slightly(although to us humans it feels much cooler) but increases humidity quite a bit. Be careful to not over saturate your area. With an ac unit, you just need to keep the condenser dry(via fresh air) and its good to go mostly.


i agree with the above. Hot hot air through a fan = increase chance of failure. If that fan fails while your away for 5 hours, dead plants unless you have thermostat backup. also most light hoods are not perfectly sealed, so you could be sucking in air that is not filtered and putting dirty air into your attic, most like its not enough to smell outside though. When pushing if your light leaks you just loose a little efficiency is all.

I think its better to pull through the filter and hood..the only thing i push through is my silencer and then outside..... I run a 1000w in a 4x4 tent i run an 8" Inline fan = filter>duct>hood>duct>fan>outside......My temps are around 77-82 degress and thats with ambient temps around 65-72

so your not concerned with diminishing the longevity of your fan by pushing very hot air through it? These fans cool themselves by passing air through, yet i feel it may be difficult if the air is very hot.

If your hood is sealed well the smell isnt an issue, but i would be worried about stray leaks around the glass on my hood leaking stinky air outside.

No so far the hot air hasent hurt my fan or stopped it from coolin itself i also rap the fan in 2 blankets and still able to cool itself just fine... however i did have to seal the edges of the hood where they touch tha glass with aluminum duck tape. So yes you are right it would pull air in through the hood bypassing the filter....When i first set this grow up my test runs showed that to be an issue....lil tape problem solved....
