I read that thread too, pretty cool.Check out what I am starting to try now in my thread, similar to hobbes' method.
CCOB: circle crop of bud 'lst plants around tomato cage'
top plant above 1st node, veg 2 stalks, transplant to bigger pot on ~30deg angle, add cage and train around bottom ring, send to flower. All side branches become tops (along with 2 main stalks/tops) and have minimal stretch up/around the cage.
I should be able to keep my canopy between 8" and 18-24" from start to finish so I neve rhave to move my 600w air-cooled hood.
I used different size pots and buckets since they're around the same size as the pot's footprint anyway. I would think crates would take up a lot of space but if it works for you, awesome! If I hadn't had an opportunity presented to me when I did, I'd still be doing it like you guys/girls and harvesting a plant every week or so. I'd be running a lot less lights right now too...
