Smells like hay during dry process!!

Hey all,

We just finished our first grow. They got chopped last Friday (1/28), are hanging in a cool dark place with a fan blowing the air below them, not directly on branches. I'm a bit concerned because of the smelll, it smells like hay.

From reading forums here as well as on the net, it seems this is normal for the cure process but is it the same during the drying process?? ok to smell like hay and its normal for some strains?

I do check them a couple times a day, making sure humidity and temp is right for mildew and mold prevention and haven't seen any problems in that area. I *goosed* a bud this morning and my goodness it smells sweet on my fingers, very pungent and almost lemony (trainwreck) but smells totally different to just walk into the area.

I really feel like this is going to be fine but the reinforcement of others more proficient in their grows would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Suite & family

Thanks for the good words, nice to hear and good luck with your future grows. Being new too I don't have info on the *growing end* of Jack Herer. We grew Trainwreck, Hogsbreath, Northern Lights and Cream Sodica. All I can say is you found a great forum, I'd have been lost without them as most here are very willing to help, through the good and the bad.

If i had a nickel.... for everytime i heard this....
Yes sometimes right after you chopp a plant down it will smell the strongest...(maybe better after a nice cure)
But a couple of days after drying the buds tend to lose there smell a tad...
This is because all the nasty plant matter (plant insides... chlorophyll..etc) are evaporating...
U know that nasty tasting uncured smell...

Once the plants are dry enuff .... i putt them in jars (usually 5 to 7days)...
And thats when the hay smell is the worst....
Im thinking inside my head " were did that amazing smell go that was funking up the whole neighborhood go"....
but within 2 weeks from this point.. the smell should come back....
And youll smell it quickly when breaking it down....

On the other side if you dry them out too long or not long enuff and mold them the taste and smell will be crap...
And lastly if the smell wasnt there during the initial chopp... itll never just appear out of no where....
