Thats about 100 watts/plant and i'm not sure on the 400w coverage area with that hood. It would do, but extra light will never hurt (usually). The hortilux bulb is definitely the one you want, $50 seems pretty good those are pricey (at least at my store for 1000w). If thats $250 out the door for a 400w thats really not so bad. I don't see any aircooling on that hood instead a ballast, this could run very hot if you have poor ventilation in the closet. Make sure you can control that before you invest.

Having sidelighting is never a bad idea. All sounds good, decent depends on what you mean by decent. in that area you might be able to fit like 4 2-3 oz plants if you do it right. i dont really think jumping up to a 600w or something would help much, its more of a room issue imo. cfls for sidelighting are still a good idea though.

so a 600 watt wouldn't help much more cuz of my space. i will have cfls for sidelighting, but what ones to use? mix daylight and soft white? my 2 plants right now have 5 tops on one, and 4 on the blue dream. plus 3 seeds.

Yes, they do. Quite a bit in fact. Are you sure that light includes a ballast as well? i looked all over and could find no info on what kind of ballast comes with and if its a remote ballast or not. A remote ballast can be kept outside of the grow area and therefore your heating issues become half as big. I would very strongly suggest you air cool your lights, keeping them close enough and raising them when the plants get too close is very important foe optimal growth. w/o my air cooled hood i can keep it 12-16 inches, w/ the air cooled hood going i can lower it to 6-8 inches no problem.

the ballast is in the hood. so maybe i won't get that one. I really want a remote ballast. Do you know of any places online i can buy a decent light for 300? i want an air cooled hood too. so maybe i have to spend some more money than originally thought. but need to invest well to get a great return. so eh.

also, i do have the a/c unit that will be in there. it is rated for a 200 sq foot room.

Yes, i do. And email them and ask for a discount from them, they will give it to you, they always do me, saved me hundreds of dollars. unfortunatley i cant copy and paste to link the exact page address though. go to www.htgsupply.com then hit grow lights. Now hit standard magnetic growt lights. go to where it says htgsupply grow light systems. now find HTGSupply 400 watt High Pressure Sodium Grow Light link. get the upgrade to a euro reflector, adds 60 to the price, if you want to upgrade the bulb to the hortilux one its 55 added, so a total of =so $235 before haggling with them.

Hmm, it seems links to htgsupply are working again, lol, last few days everytime i tried it gave me an error message and that the page couldnt be found

I use allot of the HTG Supply digital greenhouse combos. Upgrade the bulb and get a spare when you buy. People say their shuff is cheap chinese, whatever, but I'm running like 3000W's of it right now, and it's had no issues. Hard to beat the price and service. I only buy lights and filters from them. Their brand stuff. I but my nutes\soils and everything else from my local guys.
