Does this mean it's a female (pics)?

I was wondering if the little "spikes" coming from the joint where the branch and the stem meet were an indicator of gender (see bottom pic). As well I was curious if any of you more experienced growers can tell me if the purple hue is a quality of the strain, of is this what it looks like when it is too cold? (see top pic):

takes 1-2 weeks to tell a plants sex from 12/12, you will notice a female from a male. the picture u showd us those pistils should be clear which means its a female. now males... ooo boy they just grow polen sacks all over the sack u should notice because it would look like little pea's growing on top of each other.

You will be able to tell when its female clear as day when the two White hairs pop out In my experience males show sex alot faster. If you plant produces Round Balls its male White Hair its Female. A lot of people dont recommend this but i haven't had a problem doing it, when i am ready to switch to Flowering i put them on a 24 hour Dark Cycle this tends to trigger the plant that its almost winter time and time to start flowering. I have done it on 4 different grows and never had a problem so this might help you out. after you do the 24 hour dark cycle put it on a 12/12 cycle and you should be able to tell sex in 7 days. Also when you start getting purple leaves its more then likely that the plant is cold.

Depending on the strain it could show you signs of sex before you even start to flower or in my situation it took just a little less than 4 weeks to show sex.

Those 'spikes' are called stipules - and they are on both males and females...not to be confused with preflowers, which will tell you gender.

I'm new to this site and quite new to growing however I have done a lot of reading and have done one grow myself. As far as I know using stipules to determine sex early has not been officially confirmed as 100% accurate but the following held true for my grow.
If the stipules point outward and away from the main stem that would indicate male.
If the stipules point towards each other and remain tight to the stem that would indicate female.

From your photo I would say yours will turn out male.

It would be interesting to see how true this is for any current grows out there.

Thanks for sharing your evidence to disprove the possibility that this might hold some weight. Oh wait - you didn't.
I didn't say this WILL tell you the sex - I simply said I've come across some information where this has held true for other growers and myself in my limited experience. Maybe coincidence - maybe there's something to it.
Maybe someone could contribute a meaningful comment that would lead to an actual discussion on the matter - that's what forums are for right?! :)

I would be interested to hear that aswell. I remember reading that quite a few years ago, so when I started reading up info in preperation for my grow, I was expecting to come across that info regarding sexing.
I never knew about the balls and hairs until reading up here, which to me sounds like the safest and best way to do it. But at the same time have been left wandering about using the stipules, and weather or not others use it, and with what accuracy.
I will say though, when the time comes for me to sex plants, I will take note of the stipules and which direction they point simply to satisy my own curiosity.

I am just about to start the plant it flower. All I can tell is that it appears to be a female sativa. It has female pre-flowers.
