Copycating a strain?

I have a question about breeding. Keep in mind I'm brand new to this, so please save disparaging condescension for elsewhere.

I understand that many strains are crossbreeds of other popular strains, so would it be possible to make your own version of a clone-only strain if you knew it's genetics. e.g. DJ Short Blueberry x Super Silver Haze = Blue Dream (kinda) or Northern Lights x G13 = Dumpster (Kinda), or would these plants possibly inherit entirely different traits every time?

They would inherit completely different traits each time. If you planted 1000 DJ Short Blueberry x Super Silver Haze seeds you might get a few that resemble Blue Dream but it will be different - you will never get the exact same blue dream genetics just like your parents will never have another you. If they had 1000 kids they might get one similar though.

i imagine they would be DIFF. inheriting diff % of each plant. will differ, some may have more of the male traits some more of female get it? also. Their are MANY diff PHENO types, and BELIEVE me that thoes that BRED to make our POPULAR strains today Were the BEST of the BEST pheno.

So, how do they stabilize a strain? If you get different plants every time, wouldn't that mean they'll get different seeds every time, even if they breed two that came from the same parents?

Example. Get a Good pheno of your Male and Female.. Clone thoes x100... Now breed thoes 200 plants.. and you have a SHITLOAD of the same seeds.

Repetitious selective breeding. You plant 1000 seed and pick your favorite two and breed them.

Now plant 1000 of their seeds and pick the best two with similar characteristics and cross them.

Now plant 1000 of their seeds and pick the two that most exhibit the traits you wants.

Repeat. Again this is the same with dogs, cats, corn, potatoes, and even humans.

If we would organize a selective breeding program for humans to decrease our size we would solve alot of the sustainability problems. Smaller people use less resources.

haha.. yea. but we have no use for it here. Maybe with evolution/ genetic altering. we will be diff when in Space. I personally think when Man kind can be Born, Live and Die in space. thoes who do live up their will not be the same as us.. as they do not need the same type of body. and its functions.. I wouldnt be surprised if MAN, Created / Made a Human like being but smaller and more suitable to live in space.

So what you're saying is it effectively takes years to make a (mostly) uniform strain, but it's possible after a few generations? I'm asking this because there are some traits I've noticed I like in certain strains and would really like to combine the best of both worlds, but I don't have access to clones for certain clone-only strains. I basically would like to make a similar strain, but not 100% the same.

Well its complicated. There are F1 stains for instance (most all apples are f1 strains or cuttings). This would be where you have a stable strain crossed with a stable strain and the outcome is generally the same over and over. But if you crossed the f2 (the seeds of the stable strain1 x stable strain2) you would get completely different plants.

Some f1 strains are mostly stable but have two or three phenotypes which differ from each other but are created every time by the original cross. This is still considered a stable strain as the results are predictable versus every plant having a greatly different phenotype.

plus if what you start out with is a stable strain and not just a hybrid that may have come from two very unstable parents...something like a northern lights or a skunk or afghani, your results are going to be more stable as well.. there will be much less variation in phenotypes like there would be from two unstable hybrids.. this is why its always best to start your breeding project with a very stable strain.. this is why you see a lot of plants that have either skunk or afghani or what have you as a parent in them..
and i think that you need to breed to atleast an f6 for that strain to be considered stable..

Yup. He's right about that.

Easy way to create your own "strain". Cross a random hybrid with a random hybrid. Plant a bunch of the seeds - they will all be super different from each other. Some will be great and some terrible so choose the good ones you like and clone em. Now you have an amazing one of a kind clone only strain ;)

Great thread,so many choices and opinions.
I look into the"pedigree" of the "strain" going back up the trail as far as possible.
This aint popular but it's true..............they all started out as bagseed.
I've been around for a while,done a bunch of trading and pollen chucking and have a general idea what's going on in the biz.
Now in some areas of the world there are some pure landrace strains being grown.
There have also been people going into said areas to collect genetics,usually trading some seeds along the way.
Been going on for a long time and has been well documented on the old inter-web thingy.
So at this point and time ,really how pure is anything given human nature and wind currents.
They are all polyhybridmulti hacks at this point,some of which are outstanding,don't get me wrong.
That being said hit yer best plants together,I choose males based solely on structure and vigor.
Like begats like in the werld of breeding anything,do it and you'll never look back.

You also want to read about how to create F2's and back crossing. It doesn't take forever, but it can be time consuming to stabilize a strain after mixing. Basically, you mix two strains, plant the seeds, look for one with the traits you want, then cross it back to the original parent whose traits you are trying to keep. These are F-2. You grow out a bunch of these seeds, which are closer to your original genetics, and pick the best. Then you cross it back with the original parent, and this will create the F-3, and this is usually where most people consider it stable. Some people have gone to F-7, but a lot of times that's just to get the original genetics from a clone only stain.

This is my understanding at least. There are a lot of breeding threads here, check out Subcools thread. He goes into a l ot of detail and m ales his strain with males, not feminizing.

This all started because Riot Seeds has SUPPOSEDLY started producing Blue Dream seeds. I call bullshit because 1)Blue Dream is a clone-only strain out of Santa Cruz, and a relatively new one, so I doubt they just made some seeds and 2)If you look on Riot's website, you'll see they use the same pictures on several different seeds.
