question

so i should get one of those pens. the only pen i have now is for ph. i was thinking about getting the one that is ph,ppm,ec, and temp or whatever but it was like 200 bucks and i didnt want to spend that kind of money without knowing more about that stuff

IMO multi meters that are cheap arent worth bothering with.

i use a HANNA pH meter and a BLUELAB EC TRUNCHEON.

The differences between EC and ppm is that EC is the more universally accepted measuring system.

Where as with ppm it all depends what version of ppm's you use as to what equals EC1.

either 500ppm equals EC1
or
either 700ppm equals EC1

its all governed by your ppm meter and how its calibrated.

Where as just using EC's

EC1 equals EC1 .

o i c. so maybe i should get one of those multi-pen thingys then? although i still think im doing pretty well for never knowing or paying and attention to the ppm or ec. ive only been checkin the ph cuz i figured that was really important

Well there is an age old saying "if it aint broke dont fix it"

EC or PPM etc could be something you look to improve on next time.

With hydro , testing for nute strength and measuring how plants are feeding is usually done by testing your res to see whether there is an increase in EC or PPM which would mean plants are using more water from your mix, so you would then reduce your ppm when topping up etc.
