Most still refer to it as a CCW. However, Michigan as do many other states refer to it as a Concealed Pistol License AKA CPL

As per CPL laws, a revolver is certainly considered as a pistol and therefore falls under the same license. I'm sorry should have clarified, yes there is a difference between a revolver and a pistol as far as the actual definition is concerned.

When distinguished as a subset of handguns, a pistol is a handgun with a chamber that is integral with the barrel, as opposed to a revolver, wherein the chamber is separate from the barrel as a revolving cylinder.

Don't know about your state but our CHL is for revolver only or pistol and revolver, it depends on which one you qualify with. Pistol covers carrying a revolver a revolver only prohibits one from carrying a pistol

Short Barreled Rifles (SBR) are not legal in Michigan.

Michigan does allow 'michigan pistols' to be carried openly or concealed, as you can any other pistol.


The FEDERAL definition of a rifle, states that it needs a minimum 16" barrel, and be a minimum of 26" in length.

Michigan says a rifle has a 16" minimum barrel, and a 30" minimum length.

Thus, those guns defined by federal law as rifles, that have a 16" minimum barrel, and a length between 26" and 30" are considered pistols in Michigan. As far as I know, MI is the only state that strays from the Federal definition.

Thus, if you were to make a rifle that is defined as a pistol under michigan law it would be LEGAL for you to carry that rifle loaded in your car, just as you can a handgun (with CPL of course), but would NOT be applicable to any reciprocity in other states, since it is considered a rifle, and not a handgun outside of Michigan
