In Soil - Do you water and feed over the soil, under the soil or in a combination?

When using a soil based medium - Do you water and feed your plants over the roots from the top of your medium or under the roots from the drip pans underneath? Or do you swicth off between feeding and watering?

I usually feed from the top and water until I have runoff.

i feed from the top, if its not accepting enough liquid and runoff is coming too quickly, then i put a drip ring on there and let it sit in some runoff for about 30 minutes before i dump the remainder and place the lady back on the grass.

Every other day I water over the roots and then on opposite days I feed from under the roots! I like to trick my roots into having to grow around!
