400Watt + 600watt= 1000watt?

what im asking is will a 400 and a 600 use up the same amount of power as a 1000 over an identical period of time? and if so do you think they would be more effective and possibly able to cover more space?

depends were you live...200-240 is for UK/Europe ......... 100- 120 is for N. America

If you were to use multiple 600 or 800 watt systems it should actually be more efficient than the 1000 watt equivalent, not sure about 400 watt ballasts though.

actually thats a big negative, if the chart up at the top of the page serves correct a 1000w bulb emits 140,000 lumens (at the bulb) now at its required height of 16-24 inches (16 being someone with GREAT ventilation, 24 being safe for most) you wouldnt even be at the intensity of 2 400,s lol. i run 6 400w air cooled reflectors in flower with a 440cfm fan and i keep my lights 6" from my tops with no heat stress. 3 lights cover a 2x8 area excellent (very long rectangle) on each side of my room and im telling you 2 1000's couldnt do what they do. i highly doubt 4 could as the ceiling height is only 6' high.

However factor in distance of leaves from the top of the canopy. Intensity from a 400w drops off faster than from a 1000w. Put another way a 1000w has more 'penetration'. If you're flowering plants at 8" not a big deal but if they're 24"+ (kinda arbitrary #) becomes important...If you start thinking about surface area of leaves vs distance from light etc you can see how a 1000w can be better in some situations

BTW I'm not saying 6 400w wouldnt be better than 2 1000w in most cases but setting up 2 1000w would be cheaper

well i wouldnt know about any 1000's period im going off the chart posted my anonymuss in the first post and it is saying even at 10" from tops im still getting just as much lumens at 6" with my 400. i do know people who are hardcore 1000w fans so i think i may go get a light meter just to put this old wives tale to rest once and for all im pretty sure that my 400's are putting out right around what that scale is saying but i guess we will see when i grab the meter. now if what you are saying is true, and according to the chart' for a 1000w to be putting out as much lumens as a 400 at 6" it would have to be 10" now im just saying thats only 4" dif so how much more ground can it really cover more with 4" higher REALLY lol. but i know everybody loves there 1000's but i love my 400's and the 2400w's im running i wouldnt trade for 4 1000's anyday, mine cover more area and use much less than 4000w's so the electric bill alone will pay me back prably already has.
