I'm itchin to go hydro, I really am. But I've been trying to master a few techniques in soil. Mainly LST and Fimming. I plan to update our journal with the next girls in line to highlight some of this


Dave, Looking Good. It's nice to see some lovely pre-flowers. It's nice to know your plants have working girlparts - Also, LST at your current state would definitely be a good idea. I'm there with Jin. You should make sure to do anything you can do to spread that light around.

Before reading the posts from yesterday where you guys pointed out that I'm getting preflowers, I took a gander at my girl this morning and saw a bunch of interesting things like these all over her:



YEEEEEE-HAH!!! ! I think it's exactly 2 weeks since I started the 12/12 cycle & using flowering nutes. Can't wait to see the actual flowers start to grow now!

Thanks everyone for all the advice & positive comments. This is the first time that I've gotten this far in a grow. (Had a previous attempt where the plants died in early veg.) So it really helps to have people walking me through this. You are so AWESOME!

Maybe just a coincidence that I added some Liquid KoolBloom yesterday afternoon? It can't work that fast, can it?

KoolBloom is def the way to go.
And what your prob seeing are the 2 little female preflower LOOKING things that stick out on both sexes. (I always confuse them too, as they proceed preflowers. If you already have them, then awesome, they're prob female preflowers. If you don't, then don't confuse them.
Good luck man, I'm still liking the fogger and DWC setup! Thinking about doing soemthing close to this myself for my next grow.

Thanks again, man. The DWC/fogger setup is very simple, even for a newb like me. The ultrasonic fogger cost me just under $40 incl shipping. I'll write more about it in a separate post, but it was an experiment that seems to be working out ok. I'm sure that the plant's genetics have something to do with its nice growth as well. I keep chopping off branches and it keeps growing back!

Also, those are pre-flowers alright. I can clearly see the big ol' hairs pokin' in your first photo. My eye has become super trained. I can spot hairs on a female (when growing from a seed, because clones show female hairs even in veg) even when they are almost too small to see with the naked eye. Ah, those days of sexing seed plants... nostalgic.

Edit: also note that the fresh developing leaves of your tops have started that "cupping" or "praying" shape. That's where the big nugs develop. I really wouldn't mind stuffing some of that in my vape when it's done. LSD, huh? hmmm. Looking lush. I'm impressed by the detail in the deeply serrated leaf edges. You can tell that the plant is of superior genetics because of the fine detail in the development of the leaves. You're doing great. Keep it up. Again, I wish I could smoke it. I can already tell it's gonna be great weed.

Edit again (sorry, high and having afterthoughts): If you're worried about some of your taller branches getting too close to light (something I'm all too familiar with), I see easy opportunity for late lst. You could easily tie a cotton string to those and fasten them downward. This will tend to open up the entire bush structure, giving you more exposure and power to the smaller inner sub-tops. This improves the canopy and consequently yield... not to mention keeping your highest tops safe (safer) from burning. ** you get two stars for your choice in clippers. I have the spring loaded Fiskars too. Isn't it great? I don't need a grinder because of it. Mine serves double duty as a bud grinder when smoking. Those blades are indestructible and they never get dull. A nice piece of engineering. You don't want to trim bud for 16 hours with anything less imo.

Goddammit! Edit Again! Your nute reading question. If you haven't drastically increased the dissolved solids in your res from what they were in late veg, you should be fine. Increase gradually with a smaller res like yours... you can't go as cowboy as me. But ALWAYS watch your plant carefully. One of the greatest advantages to growing hydro is the speed of plant reaction. Meaning if you fuck something up, you'll see it faster and you can correct it virtually immediately by various remedial measures. Something soil growers (sorry Snicker and Chairman...but i bet the two of you would be great at hydro) have a harder time with because of slower plant reaction to remedial measures. And I read horror stories here of people having to manually flush like nine gallons of water through each of their many soil pots? Back breaking. I love smoking a good soil grow, but I could never do it. I'm pretty lame when it comes to that lol.

FINAL EDIT I PROMISE:
A related note on soil vs. hydro. Soil, as they say, is the stuff of mother earth. So please don't take me for one of those hydro, know-it-all snobs. I realize there is something more of an artificial element to water growing with concentrated liquid nutrient, and nothing really beats say a pure organic soil grown bud in the hands of a true master. The nuances from having been grown in the more natural way they were intended does have an impact on overall quality. The yield may not be as crazy, but there's something to be said for quality over quantity. Hydro growing is great for me because 1. I'm incompetent with soil. I've tried it in the past and have done some pretty embarrassing shite. Nute-lock, I hate you. 2. I'm lazy. I actually do believe that hydro, contrary to popular belief, is much, much easier than soil. 3. See number 2. Hydro is EASIER than soil. I don't care what anyone says. Snicker and Chairman, a low pro tub from your local walmart... a small 'steamer' setup not unlike Dave's? Hmmmm? Lol.

But now because of a spinal cord injury I can't drink very much anymore, because it flares up my nerve pain like CRAZY. Pot, on the other hand, soothes my nerve pain better than any prescription pain meds do, and it has the added benefit of relaxing me in the most wonderful way! So I'm looking forward to being able to vape my own shit on Friday nights once I harvest & cure it. Waiting for that day won't be easy, but it really motivates me to take good care of my girl!

Regarding your spinal cord injury, I'm always happy to hear it when someone has found a very legitimate medical purpose for consuming ganja. It sounds like the herb is just the right thing for you. I only wish you had ready access to low-cost, LEGAL, weed as all we patients (especially those with more serious conditions) should have. I hate thinking of you having to wait until your plant finishes to smoke. Honestly, if there was something I could do about that, I certainly would.

Me? How does it help me? God, where to begin. I first got my doctor's recommendation because of a bad back. I have a slightly herniated disc in my lower back... been this way since a kid. I opted out of painful and risky surgery because my disc pain was nagging at times, but not completely debilitating. I also am very emotionally high strung when I'm not medicated... I think I might even be bi-polar, but I have to see a doctor sometime in the near future to confirm. So yeah, if it weren't for weed, my life would be a bit more difficult day to day.

The way your plants are developing, you're gonna see their real structure in the flower phase. With all the actual growing they do in flower, you have yet to see what your plant really looks like.

I'll keep watching. This is way better than just watching my own plants like I used to do before interacting with other posters here.

Yeah, as soon as you see one or two poking out, it's not long before they start that 'angry multiplying' routine. And I wouldn't put ANYTHING past Liquid Koolbloom.

I guess you & I have some things in common. For one, we both get legitimate medical benefits from weed. Nothing else works to relieve my nerve pain at times, but then I just take a few hits and usually start to feel relief within a minute or so. It usually works amazingly well for nerve pain. When the pain is really extreme, then I need to get really baked, but it still works. If I smoke enough, it's going to put me to sleep anyway. The effect might wear off in a couple hours, but then if I still need to, I just light up again.

Yeah, like you, it calms my nerves, too, and sometimes I really need it bad. Because I've been paralyzed from the chest down for the past 10 years, I can't get laid anymore. And since alcohol makes my nerve pain flare up something awful, I can't get drunk anymore either. So reefer is the only thing that will really calm my nerves and put a smile on my face nowadays. And for reasons that I won't go into right now, my life has been kind of sucky for the past 2 months and it probably won't get better until the end of summer when I finally heal up.

I think it's great that you can keep your possible bi-polar condition under control by toking the herb. Glad to hear it. That's a huge testament to the nerve-calming effects of this medicinal plant. Alcohol & other drugs can make people get violent, but pot has the opposite effect. Another reason why it should be legal for everyone, not just for people like us who need it medically.

If only our laws in Minnesota were more like California's regarding medical weed, it wouldn't be so bad living here, especially thru our long, long winters. But fat chance that the law will change anytime soon. Too many hicks who live in quiet little towns think that pot is a drug just like meth and oxycontin. And yet all the meth labs are found out in the boonies, right next door to churchgoing small town folk. They repress all their normal desires until they go off the deep end into serious drugs or worse. A friend of mine showed me the house that Sybil grew up in near here. There are a lot of very nice people here, just too many closed-minded conservatives who will never vote for medical mj.

Hey Jin, I got a question for ya. If someone came to visit California on vacation, would it be easy for an out-of-stater to buy some pot? I know that you have to be a CA resident to get a weed card, but I was just wondering if it's easy to buy some decent stuff somewhere without a card, either at a sympatheic dispensary or by finding a patient who'd be willing to sell some or whatever. I'm NOT asking you to connect me up with a seller. It's just a general question, seriously. I was just wondering what my chances would be to score some weed if I flew to, say San Fran, for a few days or so. I can buy it here occasionally, but the only seller I know is a friend of a friend and he lives about a 90 minute drive from me. And anyway, I'll be needing a vacation to a warmer place maybe later this year.

Hey, based on another grower's recommend, I'm switching to Advanced for my next grow.

Yeah, that weed hookup connect is a tricky one. The days before the laws really kicked in and when I was still buying on the sly from what is widely considered "a drug dealer" are a distant memory. It didn't seem that long ago just a few year ago, but things have been different in LA (and I would imagine in others regions of California) for quite some time now. The laws are not perfectly pot friendly here by any means, and even though recent decriminalization/legalization efforts failed, the fact that that sort of legislation even came into light changes the pot climate here... for the better.

Nowadays, everyone and their neurotic accountant is smoking pot in LA. From skate-boarders waiting for the bus, to businessmen dressed in suits, you sometimes just get the smell of dank smoke in the air in this city (I shit you not... it's that common). So the concept of the 'drug-dealer' where marijuana specifically is concerned is largely a thing of the past here because of the abundance of dispensaries. Really, lots and lots of people have cards, and there's the argument that the doctors are just handing these out like library cards... and I can understand where they're coming from in all truth, but I would also argue that many if not most people would benefit from pot on occasion for stress relief purposes alone. Stress is a physical / mental condition we ALL have. It's a wonderful city and state and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves pot.

But about state residency issues, that might pose a problem. If you were licensed in another state, I think the paperwork should be easily transferable enough (i'm not sure though, someone correct me if I'm wrong), but if you're coming from a state without med laws, you might have to establish at least an intention to maintain residency here (if you have legit med issues - and it sounds like you do big time). As far as a temporary stay, you would have to rely on a patient you know to 'gift' it to you strictly for compassionate medical purposes. Anything that resembles exchange of monetary for goods is moving into a grayer area. If you get caught for 'flipping' as the street term is called (reselling meds purchased from a legal dispensary at a profit), you'll still get arrested here. Like say you know a licensed medical patient. This patient knows your ailments benefit from cannabis therapy, so that patient gives you a small quantity. You in turn use that cannabis responsibly and not in public areas. You then show your appreciation by taking that patient out to a steak dinner. It's really best to keep it that way if you can.

That's really interesting that the days of buying pot from a "dealer" are a thing of the past in CA. And that's a real GOOD thing. Seems to me you have a pretty good system there, making it legal for a large portion of the population to buy pot. It probably cuts down on the criminal element that's involved in the business. I just hope that CA will lead the way by making it legal for anyone to buy it someday (except for kids... even though I was a pothead in high school myself). When that day comes I'll hop on a plane and visit your state... you betch-ya'!

Coming tonight! I got some new pictures of tops & stuff. Had to change out the water today, which is a bit time-consumimg for someone in a wheelchair... but I still enjoy every minute of it!

Just changed out the water this morning. About the beginning of flowering week 3 (now day 16).


This is my big, messy plant. Somehow I need to trim it and bend the tall branches over. The tallest ones are already touching the fluorescent lights.


It's hard to photograph these without having a manual focus, but here are a couple of branches that have some preflowers on them.


These are different views of the top of my plant. Preflowers are at the very tops of some of the tall branches. I'm afraid it might be tricky bending all of these branches over to keep them from touching the lights, but I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

QUESTION: I need to bend a bunch of branches and there are a lot of leaves in the way. Should I trim off some of the lower fan leaves before I start tying down the long branches? That's what I'm thinking of doing.

The other thing I was considering was just sacrificing some nice preflowers and chopping the branches down about 5-8 inches. The branches are awfully long for the confined space that I have. I should have forced flowering before the plant got anywhere near this tall, but live and learn.

Just a photo of most of the plant to show what a big, bushy mess it is. I'll try tying down the tallest branches, but will probably have to prune off some of the lower leaves first. I think I'll also need to anchor the net pot to the lid before tying anything, in order to keep her from falling over. She's always been pretty resilient to pruning & always seems to grow back new branches & leaves without much trouble. I know that it's past the veg phase already, so will try to keep pruning to a minimum. This may be the trickiest grow problem that I've had to deal with so far. Gotta buy some string, so I'll give it a go tomorrow. I just hate to cut my baby!

OK, thanks for the warning, Josh! Point taken. It's not a bagseed at least. I bought my seeds from The Attitude.
Already getting a lot of female preflowers, which are very nice to see. I hope I can salvage them all.

Here's an example of the method I might use to chop down a long branch. Two different places on the stem are chosen that I can pick from here.

Seems like you'll have to...godda make room for buds. Sucks to cut once your in flower. But stable genetics are DEF a plus.
I'd say prob the lower one, then lower the light until it's about as close as it is now, as long as your not burning the leafs moving up as needed. If you go with the higher one, you may run out of room with bud development. But...I can't see it in my head really, I don't know the actual lengths. So, go with what you feel!
