Hey Toolage, for someone who has not grown before, would it not be better to get that waxed first before starting to "chuck pollen" around as some people say.
First off, I would say, why are you growing? For your own stash? or just to create something unique that no-one else has got? And then what will you do with that creation?
I am sure you are a smoker/MJ lover otherwise you wouldn't be growing, unless you want to start a seed company or something to sell that one unique strain.
In Bred lines are something that are created through inbreeding, simple as that. That is to say, you are breeding towards the look and traits of a certain phenotype. Normally this will create identical plants through all future offspring. This is a good starting point but the future offspring are only identical becuase you are crossing a Male and a Female that hold the same chromozones and characteristics. This is really what you want I would say in your end product.

To cross and create a new strain there is no point crossing like for like plants. Two indicas of similar traits will produce similar indicas, simply put, two chinese people will produce a chinese looking child. Two scandinavians will probably produce quite a tall scandinavian child. Mix the scandi's and the Chinese together then you probably get more Tibetan looking offspring, or what some people from parts of Russia look like.

Anyway, back to plants. I wouldn't say you have to necessarily start with an IBL, you need to start with plants that have the distinctive traits you are looking for to start with. Then when crossing multi strain plants you again need to cross in according to what traits you want to achieve. So if you are looking for the vigour of a Sativa, with the strength to hit the body and a short flowering period for example, you need to use the plants that produce these traint and start corssing them into each other and then using the resulting offspring to narrow down that trait to then cross into each other again. ONce you have the satifactory cross you can then introduce another line into that strain, for example to add Purple into it, or interestin gcolouring, or hard mould resistance, or auto flowering.

Really it is about time and patience. And for a new grower it surprise me that you want to go down this route. But each to their own and good luck. I have been crossing and inbreeding my plants for a number of years to get my own seed product (I think I have order 2 packs of seeds in my life) and it does take a very long time.

As far as choosing males, again, aI re-iiterate, depends on what trait you want from them. All of this requires you to grow your plants in numbers, select the phenotypes you want and progress from there. MAles you want strong side branching, deep smells just like the females, look out for structure, vigour, all the elements you would look at in a female.

I hope this helps but I would still suggest getting a couple of grows under your feet before going down this route that will probably in all essence take you a couple of years to get waxed. But hey, you are probably moe patient than me. Good luck, DST

Well I want to make a custom strain for my own stash but also to have some thing different.

Yes but what's the max amount of times that you can IBL a strain before you get the negative effects.

Well I would want a plant with a different colour that I like for looks that I like but I'd want the traits of the other strains for other reasons.

Well what I want to do is to make a strain that is purple or w/e colour that I want. A strain of the taste that I like. A strain that is a cretin height that I want that one strain or another that doesn't have. A strain that makes big buds, one that makes compact buds. Maybe a strain that produces alot of crystals on the leafs to make hash and oil with. A strain or 2 that can handle the temp getting up to almost 40C but can handle the cold if there's no head due to no power or w/e. And maybe a strain that can produce higher % or males or a higher % of females for breeding but also maybe that are more resistance to hermi stressing.

Really it is about time and patience. And for a new grower it surprise me that you want to go down this route. But each to their own and good luck. I have been crossing and inbreeding my plants for a number of years to get my own seed product (I think I have order 2 packs of seeds in my life) and it does take a very long time. But don't forget some strains prefer soil and some prefer hydro over others.

Thanks and I do plan on getting a few under my belt first but I'd like to research things before I start to get into it so that I have all the facts that I need so when I get into it I have all the info that I need and not have to try to gather it.

Toolage, sounds to me like you are looking for the holy grail. You are definitely doing it the right way by researching. I just think personally, learn about growing the plants, you can read and read and read, but until you got it in your hands then you will not get "hands on practice" Get those grows under your belt, there are a whole load of good strains out there that will give you most of what you are looking for. My first grows were from clone in the 90's and I only done my first bit of breeding a few years back. I don't want to put you off of it, but that's just what I would suggest, get a good number of grows under your belt, learn how to read plants, what are their needs, when to know something is wrong with them, or right with them, what different characteristics will come through in the end product from different styles of plants, I could go on. And you can always ask questions as you go along as well. I don't mean to come across all negative about you breeding, I am just giving my hopefully learned opinion.
Peace, DST

Thanks. I plan on starting from seed because I don't trust people when going about getting clones and growing from seed will probably give me more first hand experience then starting from clone. I already have a few strains that I want to work with picked out.

Haze , Northern Lights , Skunk , BC Ice , Hash Plant , BC Mango , White Widow , Purps (Hopefuly it will have purple in it for making a purple coloured strain that I want), G13 Haze , BC Sweet Tooth , BC JF (7 to 8 Week Strain and grows well in hydro) and AK47

But the main ones are
Haze , NL , Skunk, HP , Ice , JF
and these strains can he used to make a few selections of strains that some sites have like Super Silver Haze, NLxHaze , I could see about using HP and or Ice in them to maybe make them better.

Toolage, what you have to rememebr when buying from seedbanks is what level of genetics you are getting. A lot of seed banks do not issue the level, i.e F1, F2, F3, F4,etc, etc. So if you are buying certains strains then stabilising them is the first step, or selecting phenos you want to work with. Good luck whatever you decide.

Some of you may know, I started my first breeding attempt, by crossing a Red Kush male (Krome's The White X OGK X Lemon Chem) with a Northern Skunk female ( Northern Lights x Skunk #1) My buddy and I (Bekindbud) came up with the name Cougar Kush, anyway, here is the first Cougar F1 to finish flowering, thanks and props to BKB.

Looks and smells nothing like either parent.!!! Almost has a fresh OJ smell to it.

Looks good BC should be a beaut soon will you try and stablize it or will you back cross it with one or the other? i know its early but just thought id ask..

I ust figured i can get 3 if not 4 computer cases ontop of my vegging tent. CFL in each, ona block outside or just another cut in the ceiling fan and filter, and i could have 4 breeding boxes going at any time :) Figure HC sent me some treats well worth breeding with even if just with themselves. A word of warning though, although most of you must likely just attribute it to me already, i often have grand plans and do sweet fuck all about them with absolutely no valid excuse other than a lazy mash head :)

My Grape Kush ( Dj shrort Grape Krush X Red Kush) Another set of seeds i made with my red male.

First Female to show, she vegged for about 2 weeks.

Ok I got another question about breeding. Is it possible to do the IBL method to make the perfect male plant to use for other breeding projects?
