more protests set for this afternoon.

anonymous took down the BART website due to all this.

BART has it's own police force.

people are still pissed about oscar grant, and the it happens again, ...

"On July 3, at the Civic Center station, a BART police official shot dead a man who appeared “wobbly” and possibly a danger to others. Locals immediately decried the shooting as massive overreaction; BART officials would say only that an investigation is underway."

there is a HUGE debate going on about the jamming of cellphone service. i'm keeping my eye on this story.

Anonymous strikes San Francisco's BART after cell shutdown fiasco

San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit system is under siege from unlikely cohorts: First Amendment advocates and the Anonymous hacker group.
BART officials made a controversial decision Aug. 11 to shut down mobile phone service at all BART stations to help dismantle a potential protest, writes the San Francisco Chronicle’s Bob Egelko. As witnessed throughout the world this year, mobile phones have proven to be useful tools for protest organizers who turn to social media networks and text messages to quickly gather large numbers of people. In response, the Anonymous hacktivist group has launched a campaign to protest the potentially illegal move, writes PC Magazine’s David Murphy.

Victims of Anonymous’ cyberattack include BART’s mybart.org and the public bart.gov websites. Both of those sites were unavailable as of 9:45 EST. In addition, Anonymous released personal information of BART riders and employees as part of #OpBART, the group’s name for its campaign, Murphy writes.

Besides Anonymous hackers, BART officials are under fire from First Amendment advocates who question the legality of a phone service shutdown. A 1967 ruling by the California Supreme Court states that cities can’t stop protests in train stations, Egelko writes. It’s unclear — for now — whether that ruling would apply to modern technology, such as mobile phone services that users can tap into to organize spontaneous protests.

The maelstrom will likely continue throughout the day as Anonymous members intend to hold a protest at BART’s Civic Center station at 8 p.m. EST Aug. 15, Murphy writes. According to Egelko, BART might again disrupt phone service to stymie the protest. On one of Anonymous’ official Twitter feeds, an Anonymous representative insinuated that the hackers would try to jam police radios during the upcoming demonstration.

The catalyst for this debacle was a fatal police shooting in early July and subsequent protest July 11 that interrupted the afternoon commute that day, according to CBS San Francisco. A group dubbed No Justice, No BART rallied at the Civic Center station and tried to stop a train from departing the station. Their demands included dismantling the train system’s police force after an officer killed a man armed with a knife July 3.

Tensions are high in the city after more people rallied to protest another incident a few weeks later. Police shot and killed a man who fled a Muni light-rail vehicle and supposedly fired at officers July 16, according to CBS San Francisco. Later that night, police in riot gear gathered to control an impromptu protest in the city’s Mission District.

This kind of shit never turns out good. You always have people that take to extremes and the tax payers have to pay for it.

amazing how I havent heard anything about this stuff until now, guess the communication c@ckbloacking is working.

Also this is the kind of shit that forces change, do you not remember the union protests in your grandfathers time, or the womens liberation movement that won their right to vote, or Martin luther king? or did those protesters not force change to better society?

He does explain it. People were pushing and shoving, they wanted to stop a possibly more dangerous situation.

The level of hypocracy that stems from the authorities is just ludicrous. More dangerous than what, police shooting people dead? Seems the police are the ones with the guns and battons in that video. Logic would indicate that if you don't want it to become more dangerous you remove all weapons from the police. But nooo.

HAdn't been aware of this but cheers, i'll be keeping my eye on it. In the UK due to ecent protests the government is considering similar options with regard to the internet and they also won't stop talking about blackberries, maybe an attempt like when the arabs tried to ban blackberry because they couldn't intercept texts and messages due to it's encryption.

it's been ALL OVER every local, bay area news channel this morning. if you live in the bay area, and aren't ALREADY aware of this evenings protest, then you must still be asleep.

the local news is doing a better job then twitter ever could.

you should walk proudly. he could simply house you out back.

but then he'd have to cover your costs. easier to just toss you a few quarters and tell you to care for yourself. as long as you're back in the morning, or you lose it all. ;)

The first time I tried to use sick leave at the age of 24 my boss made me come in, no option, yes your employer owns you, because fighting wrongful dismissal is gonna destroy most people financially.
