advice for noob

Hi all! I am new ro growing, but have done many, many hours of research and reading. I have yet to obtain an accurate, or at least a common answer from any sources I have tapped. So, here goes...I have just 2 ww ladies living in a rather average size non-walk in closet. I started from seed with paper towel, used basic miracle gro when seeds sporouted. Used spring water that has been ph'd to 6.7. I used cfl until 3 weeks old. I then placed under 250 watt hps which is approx 18 in above ladies. I was wondering if the lighting is appropriate enough to yield a decent amount of product. I was hoping if I veg a little longer than expected ( maybe 15 in) would I be able to yield 2 zips per? I have been using a pinch of miracle gro tomato feet as well. The ladies are still tiny, and are approx 5 weeks from seed. There are 4 sets of leaves and 2-3 more sets starting to form. Anyways, prettyy basic, I know, but I AM a noob. Any advice is immensly appreciated. Thanks in advance! ...tomato feet...lol.

Basic rule of thumb is a gram per watt of lighting. For beginners, could be a half a gram to 3/4 per watt. Just what I've read from people asking about yields, because there's so many different variables to it.

OK, I've read up on that as well. But at other sources, ive read the lumens are the difference, etc. But in essence, I will follow your rule of thumb BC I've come to find this site the most trustworthy...thank you...anyone else have some input?

Patience tokenbrownguy, it will come. 250 is ok to start with. What are your temps and is it possible to get the light closer, I use to grow open bulb with a 400 and had it max 15 inch, or around 45cm. You will get more stretch with a 250 than say a 400, 600, etc, so the closer you can get it the better. Get a fan blowing across your plants to strengthen them up. Thros some pics up and peeps will keep you right. Good luck and I am sure you'll get your 2 zips if you veg long enough. Perhaps around 12inch-16inch. You might want to try training them as well to get more tops. There's loads of help on LST, topping, supercropping, will will enable you to max out your yield.

Welcome to RIU and growing buddy, HOW EXCITING.

Peace, DST

there you go, even closer = even less stretch.

is your hood air cooled auldone? just checking. I run 600 air cool and the plants grow a few inches away from the glass.

Move that light closer. I run a 250w HPS and it stays about 4-5 inches from the top.

its deff the lumens. i think ist supposed to be like 3000-7000 lumens for each sq footage of greenery u have lol. and i honestly believe u can never really tell wat your gonna yeild because too many factors play a big role in ur grow

I have tried having the light much closer, at approx 6 in from top, with two oscillating fans blowing on top of plants. The plants became a bit burnt. I watered, and and waited, and approx. 3 days later, the damaged parts fell off, and new growth -formed. I did place my hand under the lamp for approx one min, and did not feel much, if any, heat. I will move lamp a few inches closer and titrate each day as appropriate. Thanks everyone, for the warm welcome. I appreciate you guys not making feel so dumb...thanks again to all who reply!

Oh, and as for the room temo, it is at 78-80 degrees in the closet. I'm not sure on humidity, but I put a medium sized bowl of water in every other day as per the dryness in the closet.

Cool, you will learn your plants and your equipment/grow space the more you work with it. And anyone who says you are dumb for posting questions about growing on a MJ growing forum, is, well, .......dumb I guess.

happy cultivating

well your running 250 watt i would suggest getting somemore power cfl's etc into that closet also lower that light to like 12" above plant or even lower place your hand on top of the plant if your hand gets to hot then raise it but 250 watt should be like 8" in my opnion thus giveing max lumens to the plant to increase your buds and or weight there many different styles you should look at supercropping , lst , even topping can give you more yield size of plants also determines size of yield
and lastly food
in order to achieve maximum yields per plant plants goin to need Food your goin to need a blossom food like 0 - 33 - 54 also adding with that a flowering A and B solution from many suppliers from General hydroponics theres lots of good stufff out there and i would suggest Cal mag for any diefiencies even supermax B, fulvix , carbo boosts etc amount of time spent is goin to achieve you greatest yields

In all honesty bru, I would get myself some netting and tie it across the 4 poles of the cage. Then you need to get brutal on that bitch. And I am talking either practically snapping the stem, or by putting a stake into the side of the pot and tying a bit of string/whatever to the top of the plant and slowly bending it over until it is in an arch. Now you are going to have a few new growth tops which you can train into the net.
This will 1/ solve you stretch and height problem, 2/ by using a sreen you spread out the "apical dominance" across the screen creating lots of lovey colas.

And lastly, get all your lights on the top facing down onto that screen.

Hope that helps, any questions find my thread and ask away.

Peace.

Thanks. But she has started flowering now and i have a tie on here but from the looks i might only get like 1 or 2 new main colas. and about the screen i should have the screen over top of the entire plant.

OK, so best bet is to a) lower the light a tad b) add some cfls ( I have 2 4 ft t12 and 5 27 watt (?) Cfls as well), and change my feet for flowering...any suggestions for a noob, on which fert ( avail at local commercial store, preffered)?

Check back of bottle, look for nute ratio of around 5-2-4 for veg (it's the ratio that's important, not the actual numbers. Plus nutes with Magnesium in them, MJ love this. Then for flowering something with higher ratios on the P-K end and very low N. This is due to the plant using these nutrients to create flowers/fruits instead of mainly structural growth which is what the N is for. NPK=Nitrogen, Phosphorus Potassium in that order.

if you want to rep someone you click on the star next to "journal this post", then a little windo pops up and ou write your message in there. or just leave it blank if you prefer.
DST- ok, I'm gonna try this...+rep. There. Did I do that appropriately?

I just have an oscillating fan in my grow which is in a closet. The temps stay around 76-78F. I live in the Northwest so outdoor temps are rarely an issue and makes dealing with heat in my closet easy.
