Fresh Seaweed and Kelp from the Ocean??

i like your brew man, that looks nice. good call on the molasses, i have recently done the same thing (smaller scale) with a different variety of kelp.
the kind you have is Fucus somethingrather and is very common on most rocky shores, i chose to use Bull Kelp stem (stipe), mainly because i saw one on my way across the harbour. a friend, whose cultured abalone, mentioned that i could grind the stipe in a carrot grater to get a small even consistency, he used it to feed baby abalone. so, i got my grater and placed it on an up-side-down 5 gallon bucket, grabbed a foot long piece WASHED of stipe, and grated away! it worked wonderfully. just like carrots, but easier.
in a short while i had about a gallon of grated kelp, which i mixed with a few liters of molasses-y water, and it is brewing as we speak. i try and stir it twice daily.

hope this helps some small scale growers looking to brew their own seaweed nutrients, i will take pictures sometime shortly.
great thread, nice buds!

Hey thanks clam, yeah the beaches here are all rocky because around where i live is more inland, so the closest shores for me is out the bay or coves the beach shores are a longer drive for me to get to the open ocean im not sure the difference in nutrients!!
but that is an awesome idea with the cheese/carrot grater, i wonder how long these teas will keep in shelf life say over the winter? do you have any idea Clam?

im sure it would as long as the water isn't polluted, but you could google for precise differences, ie. nutrient values.

I put it in the bucket and used a big sheers and chop the he'll out of it. I plan to foliar at least twice a week but applying to soil is also on my mind.

yeah thats the same thing i done..
foliage spray would be good i hear its a natural pesticide as well as the leaves would absorb all those micros right away, and would be good to add some to the soil as well to help healthy microbe growth in your soil!!bongsmilie

yeah it should be ok just use room temperature water and let the chlorine evaporate before you use the water if its from the tap will kill the beneficial bacteria that breaks down the seaweed!!
i lodged a cover on top lightly to keep it from evaporating out but so air can still get in
