Any audio heads here?

I found an old sub at my neighbor's side walk marked free. I dunno what kind it is, its made in england and looks pretty old I'd say at least the 80's. The cable is cut, looks like one of those that you clip into an amplifier.

So my question is, can I just splice it to a RCA cable and plug it into my TV or do I need a receiver? I had another question but I forgot it

I doubt you would get much sound from it running it directly off your TV, it will make some sound, but your best bet would be to amplify the tv signal.

Is it a passive sub or powered ? Does it have an external cross over or internal cross over.

Unless your tv has a spot marked sub you cant just plug it into a speaker port,the speaker would be getting a full range signal,subwoofers are meant to extend bass response only,they usualy start out around 20 hz & go to around 50 hz,anything higher is midrange.

Most likely you found a peice of junk but take a few minutes to look the model up & see what its worth,go to audiogon.com & use the search feature,you can buy a 10 million dollar sound system on that site,i sell & buy there all the time,while your there look up Mcintosh,the greatest american made sound equipment in the world,its what i use in my home.

All speakers use AC.
All speakers even subs can play sounds, they are just better suited for low frequency
An amplifier and crossover are the tools used to amplify the sound signal to the appropriate speaker rating where the crossover gets it into the optimal frequency range.

I disagree most speakers are DC

Wrong. Dc is direct current and will only move the sub or speaker in one direction. The sound signal itself is an AC current.

ummm. even if the woofer is fried you can use the box and swap the driver... run an rca from your audio out on your tv into an amp or reciver and then run a speaker cable into the woofer, your gonna want some speakers for highs tho.. you could also buy a 3.5mm aux cord and plug it into your pc's sound card and then into your amp... i used to do that i had a fat jvc amp/ex/ cerwin vega at-15 speakers (huge 90 pound each speaker with 15 inch woofers)

Lol, you can either have a DC or AC speaker, DC speakers run in anything that utilizes DC power and does not already have an inverter to convert the power. Car stereo systems use DC powered speakers and home theater systems use AC. The crossover filters the HP and LP freqs.

**Edit** Grumpy is correct, you will not have a negative power with DC. DC is a constant unchanging voltage that would not cause the speaker's voice coil to jump, but get hot, AC power will give you the positive and negative power that is required to give you the sound of pos and neg frequencies.

Speakers run on AC, if you would hook them up to DC the cone would only move one way making them unusable. A cars system might run on DC but the speaker output is AC

I wasnt trying to sound like a "know it all", it's just I have been into car audio for 22 years and even did it on a professional level for 5. :)

If you have an amplifier with dc leaking into the speakers you got a problem & the amp needs repair,usually the caps when that happens.

Speakers use ac,dc will destroy a speaker,i have $24,000 main speakers so i check for dc in my lines on a regular basis.

well little update, my parents came home and my dad told me its a home made woofer with a tweeter. I couldn't get it to work at all when I hooked it up into my 3 cd stereo. But I think I might buy a set of tweeters and two 10 inch woofers for a system

All the worlds best home stereo & home theater equipment is still made right here in the good ole usa,speakers too.

That jap junk like pioneer,sansui ect is nothing but throw away garbage.

All my home stereo,hifi & home theater equipment is made in the usa & blows all the japaneese manafacturers crap off the shelf,i wish more people would buy american electronics.
