First Hydro Grow (Stealth/Closet/Deep Water Culture) (Pics)

here is my newly built hydro grow, which is also my first grow ever

Specs:
4 CFLs (Only using 2 right now)
1 Fan
Temp is about 77 Degrees
Humidity is about 35%
3 Gallon Storage Container with about 1.5 gallons of water
2 Long Air Stones


I know the reservoir is small, but its the only size that fits in this stealth cabinet. Im just planning on checking/changing the water more often
I just transplanted my plant from soil, and these pics were taken right after the transplant.
So well see if it makes it.

Cool man good luck with the grow. You should probable add some reflectors to the CFL it makes a huge differance.

Looks good man.. Your probably going to wanna cover that other hole unless you're putting another plant in there.. Light + Water = Algae.. looks good other than that though.. have you been watering the plant from the top so far?

I'm pumped, our plants are almost exactly the same age.. STRAIN REVIEW! just kidding..I'm using bag seed and I'm guessing you are too? Only because you didn't say the strand..

yeah man bag seed here too
and i just covered that whole up
and i also put some reflective tape on that top surface

did you say that you watered them from the top
like you watered them by just pouring water on them like you would with soil

yeah, I had my res level up about an inch above the bottom of the pot and also watered every day or two until I saw roots.

Hi,

I'm just 16 days into my first DWC grow, really enjoying it. A couple of things I noticed and if I’m wrong please don't hastate to correct me. And maybe you should wait for a second opinion.

I think you should raise your pump to above the level of the REZ, because water can back up along the air line and short your pump. :)

I didn't find it necessary to water the pots from the top, if that is Rockwool under those clay balls you should be fine, with the REZ level about level with the bottom of the Rockwool.

yeah, but it didn't look like his res level was that high though.. that's why I figured he was top watering..

also, I run one of the same pumps it should have come with two anti-siphon plugs.. only lets air one direction. They are a good idea if your pump is below your res. But if you don't have them, he's right, just raise your pump.

could do with some of those, I need to put my pumps somewhere a bit quiteter, I can hear the buzz from out side the room the grow room is in!!

yeah, I've noticed some pumps are ridiculously loud.. especially this one I bought that was called Silent Wave.. don't use it.. its china junk.. for like a 5 gallon aquarium I imagine..and loud as fuck. Aqua culture is pretty good though, not too loud but pretty powerful.. I think its rated 30 - 60 gal.

Looks like you've got a good start. I second the opinion that you should get/make some sort of reflectors for your lights. You are gonna love DWC. I am on my first Bubble/DWC grow with a two plant setup much like yours (with a smaller res unfortunately). I'm just switching mine to 12/12 tonight.

As for your pump being loud, you might want to try setting it on something that absorbs vibrations such as a rubber mat or a towel.

You could make a little silencer for your air pumps out of PVC pipe.
I used...

3/4 inch pvc pipe, about 4-5 inches long
an end cap on each end
glue that air tight

Then drill holes in the end caps. You can either glue nipples into the holes that the air line will fit on, or what I did is make the hole a bit smaller than the air line and i just glued it right in there.

When you're done it should be like an airtight expansion chamber. You put it in-line between your pump and your stone. It probably reduces back pressure or something...all i know is it makes the pump real quiet. I can hear my bubbles over the pump. Accually, I have a feeling I can only hear the faint hum of the air pump because I know what to listen for.

Actually, I change the water either every day or every other day, so the levels are pretty consistent. And, yes, res changes are very simple and painless.
