Anybody Raise Animals For Food?

Been looking into chicken farming, looks interesting and easy as hell. You get eggs for 3 or 4 years then a fat chicken dinner! What about Cows? That seems like it would be much harder and more expensive.. Pigs? What else is common for your average person to raise?

hay man chooks are good man easy and simple.... u get eggs and they kill snakes and the shit is really good for your lawn.... let the chook shit build and get a rack spread it around your yard and water it in a few weeks later you will have the greenish lawn.... pigs are a huge pain in da ass... cows cost heaps.... and over here in aus some ppl raise deer to eat.... goats are not too bad to keep and they ok to eat....

rabbit easy and relatively cheap to raise , after the start up cost to maintain the rabbits it cost less then 15cents per pound to raise

Had chicken's .sucked. shit would kill em, like my male rotti had 30+ chickens and duck's dead in my yard. Wanted to shoot the fucker but kinda glad because the basterd's would mess up the yard and flower bed's. Have huge pond with big bass and other fish the stupid ducks made a mud hole in my lawn when it rained right out side my front door. shit on the side walk. You have to not care about having a nice yard along with love all the bug's that come with the animals. Food to feed em, med's for when they get sick. good luck if you go for it

I had relatives that kept rabbits and goats for eating. Funny thing is, when we were kids, we thought they were pets. One evening a whole bunch of us were over there and Tia cooked a large dinner, like normal, shit was delicious. Women could seriously throw down in the kitchen. After we ate, me and the other kids went out back to look for 'George' the goat. He was our favorite goat, but we couldn't find him, so we went inside and asked her, "Tia, where's George?", without so much as a blink she replied, "Ta Loco, we just ate George". I could see one of the moms try to stop her from answering, but it all happened to quick. Within seconds we were all crying, and she looked confused, "What the hell's wrong with them?!" †LOL†

Right now I have goats, sheep, pigs, cows, horses, and chickens.

Chickens are great for eggs but a pain in the ass to pluck and butcher. Pigs are hardy animals but they eat alot and the price of their food has been going up lately.

Cows and horses need at least a few acres to graze and they eat a huge amount of hay in the winter. Goats and sheep are pretty low maintenance but the sheep need to be sheared every spring.

Are chickens noisy? If I got chickens would they bother the neighbors?
there are certain breeds that are less noisy called bantams (basically smaller).

we have 5 silkie chickens and they only make noise when laying (imagine pushing an egg out of your ass).

and only get hens. cocks are noisy, but the hens are rather quiet.

Thanks, I've been thinking of more ways to be less dependent and sustain myself. Chickens seem like a 2 for 1 deal. Eggs and meat. I did however view them as probably noisy. My closest neighbor is only 20 yards a way or so. Hmm not sure.

and you also have to watch as some towns have ordinances against having farm animals on your property if you don't have enough land, if it's not zoned for farms, etc... just an fyi...
