used 100% organics and still got an "oil" taste in some gear

this has bothered me a long time and i'd like to figure out where the problem is. my most likely target is the cheap colored plastic flower pots i bought at a department store (or was it the black polys?) but wouldn't rule out any of the soils or amendments as being contaminated.

for what it's worth, i used
bark fines (compost?!!!!) from a couple different brands
earthworm castings
composted chicken manure
mushroom compost
pearlite
vegan ferts
&
liquid kelp

anyone have any idea which of these funked my flavor up? the liquid kelp has kind of a funky odor too.

i thought using allegedly "high grade organics" like these would give me the best flavor and not the disappointing pollution taste i got. i wasn't growing diesels either, but did get and even more vile taste out of onyx from it's diesel genes.

i'm looking for just fresh healthy organic flavors, not toxic landfill.

any ideas or similar experiences that got you to drop one of these ingredients?

I really don't see anything in your run which would mess up your taste. I have heard that some kelps can cause bad taste if you use too late into flowering. Are you spraying with any insecticide/fungistat late into flowering also? Some foliars can kill the taste. I don't know when you are cutting your nutrient regimen, but on a 63 day flower, I will normally not give any fertilizers past week 6.5. I like a nice long flush to use all the remaining nutrients up.

I do a couple different types of organic grows from organic soils to organic fertilizers and soilless mediums. The only thing that I have ever seen botch taste is nutrient buildup and improper flushing at the end. I hope this helps. -Bird

Drying and curing area a huge part of it also. I try to get my drying period to go for a week and then start curing for at least a week. I've found with a 2 week cure, my NYC Diesel starts to take on trippy aspects. Very very potent. At a week it is also great, but it starts to get crazy at a 2 week cure and the jar smells like a bag of candy. The ground buds smell like grapefruit, fuel, caramel candy, and roses. Truly amazing.

Liquid kelp should have a funky smell. As long as you don't mean funky in the "it smells like diesel fuel/oil/ammonia" way, then it's probably not the cause.

i didn't cure any of the bud. i pan fried it all for immediate consumption as i've waited over 25 years to be able to FINALLY effing get high again. that's why i never finished any of the grows i attempted before. i can't resist the temptation of getting high as it's the funnest thing in life short of getting laid by a hottie.

i THINK the taste was centered around the end of flowering in some of my C99s, or maybe the thais i gave up on when they hermied 1st thin into flowering.

ypur kidding me right the internet has no tone so I cant tell if your serious or joking. If your serious you need to look at wth your doing and why wait months to screw it up in the end, that final home stretch. But seriously i fried it and u want to know why it tastes like oil?

Assuming you mean that you microwaved it to quick dry it, or that you popped it into the oven to fast dry it or something along those lines. Then you might check the surface of what you are using to dry it in. You really should let the nug hang dry and then put it in a jar for a few days burping it once or twice a day. Also you said you didn't let the grow finish? How long did you let it flower?

What are you talking ABOUT!? Don't post stupid complex questions if you don't have any clue what you are talking about in the first place. I'm upset that I gave any thinking to your question if you aren't even in the correct stadium, to think about your question a bit more would have saved you some time, at least you know where to start over now.

Do a traditional grow before you start reinventing growing all together. I'm sure we could all learn something from you (my tone was sarcasm there).

the panfrying was just a quick dry method and has NOTHING to do with taste other than whatever i smoke is going to be greener tasting. i've panfried leaf trim since the 90s. i don't put anything in the pan except leaf or bud and heat it until it's dry enough to smoke. i've jonesed to get high so much over the past couple decades and a half that i have a hard time resisting the "smoke right now" temptation. i tried to solve that my second REAL grow through cloning, but took all of my nodes out. regardless, this issue has nothing to do with flavor.

i did a good old fashioned organic grow with a pack of C99s and 1 haze skunk, 1 LSD fem and other gear when i tried to tackle cloning.

[/quote]absolutely UN FUCKING TRUE! the WORST tasting weed i ever smoked, worse than even dirt weed, was some stuff i tried to grow about 50 feet from train tracks in the woods. it had the same disgusting taste as diesel does if you multiplied it by 5. it was so disgusting, i tossed it out.

the BEST tasting weed i ever smoked was some indoor grown in home made compost that i got from a buddy at work. it was the cleanest, healthiest tasting bud i ever had. all it was was compost, pearlite, vermiculite and hyponex topsoil.

i can't stand bark fines! that all you can get where i am now. i wouldn't be surprised if that's where the flavor is coming from... some diesel contamination from manufacturing scrap recycled as soil.

if you don't think your plants tate like what you feed them, it's YOU that's totally freakin' clueless! try reading a grow guide and not skipping the chapters on soil mixing. i learned a lot about growing from geworge cervantes' ORIGINAL 1980s edition of indoor marijuana horticulture. that book had more info in it than the other two guides i had put together and each of those might have had half a dozen useful bits not in that book if that. it's since been revised.

one of the reasons many growers refuse to do hydroponics is they don't want inferior or chemical tastes. read high times or cannabible too, and you'll see the same thing come up... rich organics taste best.

you are what you eat! that's why i KNEW something was wrong with beef in the 80s when all of a sudden it started tasting really iron bloody. it wasn't until a few years later i heard about cows being fed leftover cow in their meal which would change the flavor. there's also a reason a buddy i worked with swore that kansas city corn fed beef is the absolute best or why kobe tofu fed beef is so revered.

i think that the way dogs track people by odor isn't because everyone has a unique chemistry. it's just they're smelling all of the things an individual has eaten.

you must not be a supertaster & can't pick up on subtleties. i'll bet a nickel you hate spicy food. if you can't take spicy foods, you have less tastebuds.

You sir are misinformed. The diesel, you tasted was probably the strain too. As trains use powerplant methods and are quite clean exhaust producers. I live by tracks and have yet to see any soot. The taste you tasted could have been anything. The reason plants love soils more than hydro isn't about "chemical" tastes, it's about nutrient availability. You have tons availability while the roots in hydro take up it's balanced. The taste difference is about as acquired as smelling cheese or sipping wine. I have serious doubts about how many 'weed connoisseurs' you come in contact with. My friend who introduced me to weed, thought he was one until I had him do a series of taste tests in which he was NEVER the wiser. He had it in his mind what was soil grown and what was hydro, sometimes he mistook prev. samples that he original claimed were soil and made them hydro and vice versa. The sad truth is, the more people who "know what they talking about," don't know $h!t at all.

Speaking of which: why would you cut the nodes off? It's no wonder why you are "jonesing" in the first place if you keep fucking up your plants and weed. I think you may a personality deficit if you can't help yourself, I hope it's a medical condition that limits you from growing these plants full cycle without doing what ever it is you do. I'm not judging. I just think you either aren't explaining yourself or clueless, why is my explanation the one that's singled out as absurd? I think the unknown is totally solvable dude. Plant Xylem and Phloem transport nutrients with the aid of water, if the water, pots, fertilizers are contaminated with a hydrocarbon (oil) then your plants would be dead.

You pan fried your pot for quick consumption which is probably one of the absolute worst things you did if you want a clean taste. Never pan fry your pot again unless your gonna use it for baking.

I use the Cervantes bible just like you and augment it with education in the botany field and environmental science. You want good pot then grow some from start to finish, not getting 'jonesy'.

Two weeks from seed, four weeks in veg and 7-12 weeks in flower depending on strain.
Build your own soil, augment it with pearlite and vermiculite. Use organic nutes (General Organics is my personal choice) and stop using nutrients when 40% your plant trichs have turned cloudy (get a good magnifying glass to check them)
Chop your plants when 60-80% of the the trichs turn amber and curl.
Hang dry your buds for 1-2 weeks, jar the bud after that in mason jars. Open the jars 2 times a day for 2 weeks then once a day for a week then once a week for 2 weeks.

Doing this will result in heavenly bud that's clean tasting. If you truly feel you can't adhere to this layout or something very similar them just buy ready made and never grow again.

Your soil is anaerobic and you should start fresh with a new soil mix.
