Python eats a deer in Florida

I think my trip by canoe thru the everglades will just have to be indefinitely delayed.

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, Fla. (AP) — Officials in the Florida Everglades have captured and killed a 16-foot-long Burmese python that had just eaten an adult deer.
Scott Hardin, exotic species coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, says workers found the snake on Thursday. The reptile was one of the largest ever found in South Florida.
Hardin says the python had recently consumed a 76-pound female deer that had died. He says it was an important capture to help stop the spread of pythons further north.

Remember he 6' python that tried (and died) to eat an 8' gator? Thanks to Andrew, everything that was once in captivity was released into he everglades. We even have Cockatoos and huge assed iguanas now. Pythons may very well kill the ecosystem. Pirhana and Oscars have already ruined all the good Bass fishing in Okeechobee and the glades.

Oh man, wish I hadn't heard that. It was, it is, beautiful and to see it destroyed just kills me. The Great Lakes will be lost, too, without protection. How we still allow importation of exotics is beyond me.

When non-native invasive species kill off the native species it is time to take control. Very soon Pythons will make the cougars in the marsh extinct. When they start to kill humans is when 'we' will wake up and by then it will be too late.

Eliminating a non-native invasive species is not a bad thing. We could eat them I hear most of them taste like chicken. lol.

LOL, I used to have a canal in my backyard with huge ass iguanas. They are a big problem for S. FL., they had to build special fencing at Miami International to keep the damn things off the runways. But nothing, and I mean nothing scares me more than than walking through swamps where I know there are gators. And they're hard to spot b/c they stalk you below the waterlines. The upside is they keep everyone away from grow locations.

The reason the snake was killed was not because it ate the deer - its because Pythons are a non-native "keystone" predator.
The deer was the "shock" (or hook) in the story, to illistrate that potentially no specie is safe from Python predation in the Everglades now.
