I'd spend that on the air pump alone but thats just me, my first grow was done with shitty little air pumps and me not knowing a thing other than what I read here.
LOL I guess I'm still ghetto compared to you then. I use fishtank air pumps for $20 or so. Its all good.

Not too mention water pumps and sprayers, most of the systems I built/used were a dwc(sorta) nft, aero hybrid. I like water pumps and sprayers. Omar I yahoo'd you a text, did you get it?

I think most failures don't come down to the method you use for growing(soil or hydro) but other things like I was just telling omar , room environment. With too hot a room if the nutrient solution isn't insulated from the heat of the room(this is where igloo coolers come in) then you have nutrient temp issues which causes all kinds of bad things to happen so you can either run a sterile res as best you can OR you can run beneficial bacteria(find details in heisenbergs ewc tea thread). I like to keep things sterile myself so I go through a lot of h2o2 even though I keep my res at a very low 60 degrees F. Of course winter being upon us water is easier to cool(my chiller hasn't come on for days). where soil may handle heat better the plant handles it no better and gets heat stressed just as it would in hydro. in soil if you overfeed the plant gets burnt just like in hydro, so how is it easier to grow in soil is my question.

Yeah I use pump/sprayers too. There's pretty good prices on pumps and sprayers an shit here: http://futuregarden.com/

Also a good book to get ideas on how to build a system (with parts lists an stuff) is How to Hydroponics. Search for it you can probably dl it for free somewhere.
