How do you properly use a 50 amp timer box such as http://cgi.ebay.com/50-AMP-TIMER-BOX-FOR-LIGHTING_W0QQitemZ200359460664QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2ea65abf38

Could I plug it into a 240v extension cord, plug the extension cord into my oven outlet and Mount my box on the inside of the grow room. I'm trying to be safe I dont want no fire or to kill myself. If this method wont work then how would I go about setting this up. And will it be even possible if I dont have access to the main panel?

Thank you to everyone that has any advice.

I've never used one of those, but what you said sounds fine to me. One thing to check though, is what size breaker is powering your dryer outlet. If it's 40 amp, then don't go above 40 amps of use (in fact, I'd stay in the 30-35 range to be safer). You could still use this 50 amp timer, as long as you stay below your breaker's amount.

well 40amps will net you 7680w of lighting @ 240v.... thats alotta lights ;)
a 240v extension cord wont be cheap, either. you would actually have to make one yourself out of 8/3 SO cord w/ gnd and 2 40amp nema cord ends....

but the idea would work

I would run a 6/3 wire, install a 60 amp sub panel, and then wire both 240V and 120V plugs for devices. If you are not using the full 50 amps on your timer you should be able to power anything else you need as well.

Plus it's safe.

I dont think a Sub Panel is an option or is it? Basically im in a unique situation, I have a 2 bedroom Apt my friends the superintendent of the building so I will not be bothered in that regard. I Just make sure I take care of the issues that come with the grow ex. odor. I did 2500 watt in the space before but had extension cords running from the other bedroom and the hallway trying to have everything neat and more proficient.

The Timer box would be perfect if all I need is a 30 foot extension cord that is. I could add another light or 2 which is the goal.

you could make a 30' cord for prolly less than 55$
a subpanel will cost you that much alone, never mind for the cost of the wiring and breakers
ps- im an electrician ;)

What is your alternative to this situation? I am currently debating on how I should run electricity to my room. I Want to buy a 50 amp timer box. Is they're a cheaper SAFE alternative you may have? Thanks in advance.

what in gods fucking name do you need all that power for?

you would need to be running like 4 x 1000w HID lights, an AC and more to draw a full 50 amps.

just because the timer is rated for 50 amps dosent mean you will use all that.
