Multi tent setup with 400w HPS HIDs

HEY PUFF what size are those tents? and what brand buddy? oh also what size is that fan? Do you have intake fans ? I guess you dont need none if your crusing in th 70 and 80 -but i dont know you might need some once it gets crowded.

I'm looking into having only one tent for now--the 4'x4'x6.5' Darkroom from Secret Jardin. With a 400w mh/hps bulb, would I need an air-cooled reflector (w/ 4"-6" Can or vortex fan) AND another pricey exhaust fan for the room itself? Could I just attach a carbon filter to the reflector and, with a good fan, exhaust the whole setup through the hood? I know some other variables might make a difference, but what do you think?

Any advice from Puff, Loud, or anyone else would be appreciated. I have been doing tons on research over the last couple of months and trying to get the whole thing up an running toward the end of the summer.

FYI: I pretty much suck at DIY stuff, but am going to save money where I can. I want a solid setup but will only be growing for myself and can't go crazy. Looking for Uncle Sam to help me out a bit with my project with these tax breaks coming in May/June. : )

20"x36"x64" HTG Supply grow tent. No intake fan read below for reasons why.


Im using two HTG 20"x36"x64" tents. They are $149 each and if I had it to do over I probably would go with a dark room. But I cant change that now and they are working as planned so its all good. The zippers are already starting to fall off, they are kind of cheap. The fan I finally got the temps under control with is a 6" Sunleaves Wind Tunnel. Thing is incredible. It is a centrifugal fan designed to keep the air pressure up. Be careful some of the small inline fans sold advertise their CFM ratings. That can be misleading because the number that really matter is the CFM under pressure rating. Im still confused by it all, probably why I went through 3 fans before I finally got the centrifugal fan. It has torque if a fan can have such a thing. It really bites into the air and is relentless in pushing the air through the ducting you have in place. Especially if your going to use an carbon air diffuser. I was really worried that the temps would rise even a little when I put the Odorsok on. But to my relief it didn’t change enough to notice. The noise from the fan was kind of annoying until I put the 4" Odorsok on. It does more than remove the smell it also does a decent job muffling the sound. As far as an intake fan I decided it was easier to seal the door to ensure negative air pressure forcing all the air in through the vent I placed at the bottom of the door. I think its an 10” vent? Ideally you want a small closed space to control the air flow with. I checked out the air flow by going in the closet and closing the door. As soon as the door shuts you get hit by a blast of cool air coming up through the vent. It feels as if there is a fan blowing air through the vent but there is not, just does that because I the air pressure from the exhausting air. That’s why I would recommend skipping the intake fan unless its just to move the air around a little.

I have seen pictures of setups that do just that, the carbon filter on the air intake of the fixture. I think its a great idea. I dont see a reason why it shouldnt work well? Just dont plan on supplementing with CO2, as you will have no way to control it. Besides with decent air flow you wont have a reason to look into CO2. I cant wait for my tax rebate. Maybe Ill get that dark room?
