Is this Section all about Pushing your Beliefs on others?

Whatever our philosophical, epistemological or religious differences on this subforum may be, I'm sure we all endorse the decriminalization of weed. Granted, there is a lot of pointless bickering and name calling, but there is some really worthwhile, eye-opening debates that go on here, and I have learned a lot from reading and participating in them. I've also seen people's attitudes mature over time and if their views weren't changed outright, they at least have learned to apply critical thinking toward their own beliefs and better debating skills. S&S&P is like Idol, if you tune in on the wrong night (which is most nights) you'll wonder, 'what the fuck is the point of this show?' ;)
So true. We have a common belief - that marijuana should be decriminalized. That should unite us. But healthy debate on our differences should not be construed as division or hatred. Some of my most pleasant memories are my college days in which it was not uncommon for 5-6 of us to get high, and passionately debate the mysteries of the universe, and our differing beliefs. As I remember, those sessions contributed to our freindships instead of driving us apart. Maybe it was just a special group. I don't know. But I sure miss those days.

Peace.

Why havent all apes evolved into humans? Why dont they keep evolving into humans?

Why dont fish get out of the damn water and walk already?
Why are we not seeing more apes shedding off their coat of fur and driving to work or starting a society?

Have you ever seen an ape evolve into a human?

Why havent you evolved from a human?

What caused the apes to evolve into humans?

Is it possible to have a theory without any facts?

they're waiting on the sidelines for their chance to shine (they wont look like humans when they do tho)
Why dont fish get out of the damn water and walk already?
they have an im speaking to an ex one right now...
Why are we not seeing more apes shedding off their coat of fur and driving to work or starting a society?
apes have their own societies thier coats already do a fine job and they're a good million or so years (at least) from inventing cars
Have you ever seen an ape evolve into a human?
gibberish
Why havent you evolved from a human?
thats like asking a dog why is still a dog = gibberish

What caused the apes to evolve into humans?
convergence of intelligence we're atually seeing it across many taxa of animals including crows, dolphins, elephants, chimps, and octopuses to name a few its just us humans are ahead of the curve
Is it possible to have a theory without any facts?
evolution theory is full of "facts" in fact it is easily one of the most predictive, observed, and recorded of all of the sciences and that was even before we started to unlock the genome

it took a very long time between the start of single cells and the emergence of multi cell organisms personally i dont know "what" changed them

but once life was ticking (and that is the really important part) i guess it was just a matter of time before it happened (and we're talking deep time here a couple of billion years)

Why can't fundies that think evolution is not real actually pick up a book or read some websites that explain evolution so that they don't created idiotic posts asking questions that are basically straw man attacks on evolution?

IMO their religious teachings tells them its all wrong and turns it into dogma

and questioning your own dogma/ faith is going against your religion

questioning/challenging us (without curiosity) doesn't

theres a huge proportion of christianty that have never read the bible they rely on their preachers to spoon feed them their information

on of my oldest friends who i hadn't seen in years and whos dad was a prominent vicar turned up out of the blue over christmass and during discussions with him it turned out he's never read the bible even tho he's now highly religious (his younger years were full of rebellion against it) he basicly just gets spoon fed it every sunday now

You seriously need an education in this area.

i mean when ole alfred wallace was sittin there thinkin one day hmm wonder if we came from somethin other than god....thats not a theory? and i now see what all you science fiends are sayin and when i say theory im not speakin in a scientific manner. ive never came off as a scientific person so i dont get why you'd assume i was other than just to point a small ass detail which im sure everyone understood what i meant. yall are right we're alot like apes we're also alot like dolphins genetically does that mean we coulda came out the ocean. i think all of yall thought i said it was flat out wrong and jesus is the way. ive said it wayyy too many fuckin times i have no kinda religious ties. evolution could be true i was just sayin it hasnt be 100% proven yet and until it is it wont hold any kinda weight with the world. if what yall think is true religious people would be goin fuckin crazy cause they'd know all they were taught was wrong and i dont see that goin on.

how did we evolve to have certain things animals dont naturally that are a big advantage towards us esp seein as how its such a small change in our dna.

what up tyler! ima take a look at that hopefully its on netflix i know i watched one one how smart can animals be and it was pretty good. nova is one of my fav doc makers to watch. well that and the universe on the history channel

It is impossible to speak of evolution in anything other than scientific terms. It's like saying "the sun is hot" and expecting people to assume you mean it in the same way as when you say "that girl is hot".

You ask a lot of legit question about our history, and evolution is the theory that gives us answers. See the thing is, evolutionary scientists have also though about these questions and addressed them. It only takes the effort of learning about evolution to understand how. Anyone who doesn't think evolution carries weight hasn't made the effort to understand it.

The difference is that evolution isn't ruined by knowing too much. The more you learn, the more fascinating it gets. Creationism, ancient aliens, ect all fall apart the closer you look at them. Since nothing can be proven 100% it becomes very important to look at the methodology behind the answers. You can not get a more careful and humble explanation than evolution. It is a theory that has, by matter of course, doubted itself for more than a century, made countless efforts to prove itself wrong, and comes out every time more streamlined and substantiated than before. To say, in the face of all this effort and confirmation, that evolution is simply a 'theory' is very insulting.

...sounds rather certain there H

...what would you call the 'evolution' we endure as we grow older? I don't think the same way I did when I was 4 (most of the time - and don't ask my wife if that's true or my 'theory' gets blown out ze vindow :) )

...to me it looks like spiritual evolution. Maybe there's another term for it, but they sure seem to go hand in hand.

...even as a spiritual whole we've evolved, 'else the 60's had been in vain? Maybe environmental stressors are not unique to biology? (...just throwing that out there.)

*some stoned rambling: I wonder also if there is an inherent metaphorical aspect to all things. That aspect of life is likely 'normal' for that part, or spiritual aspect of us. It comprehends the metaphor as clearly as we comprehend tangible materials or simple equations. It could be that we are able to master the outer via motor-instinctual, etc. But, being an egoic bunch we humans like to evolve the material because it is a show and tell kind of world. For example: in dreams we get a taste of what that 'other' part of us processes in the 'unseen' life. It could make sense that incorporation of the 2 is beneficial for the evolving being.
