No you're not cold entirely. And no she was not 'the greatest'. But she was great and her life story an epic (though sadly commonly echoed by those outside the public eye). Celebrities live and die having an example made out of them. They receive news coverage because they become like archetypal figures, representing us in the microcosm of the world of showbiz.
The world is cynical, sadly. Whilst I'm glad some are seeing through the materialism of celebrity culture, I hope they don't forget that these figureheads are indeed still real people.
I don't often think of celebrities at all. I am "off the" gossip "grid", and the magazines at the grocery-store checkout might as well be written in Urdu, considering how little I recognize the names associated with the latest vicarious melodrama that has otherwise cute shopperettes just mesmerized. cn
